Anyone working on a Millefiore or La Passacaglia quilt?

I am thinking of doing this quilt but have reservations. I have Willyne Hammerstein's book and templates. I have never fussy cut anything and love the look of it but feel a little intimidated. So I'd be interested in hearing how you all got started on this quilt and if you can share your tips. I guess the best thing for me to do would be to make a mock up block or rosette and see how I like it.

If you put the title LaPassacaglia in the QB search box several posts should come up.

I just got the book The New Hexagon by Katja Marek. I am working on the different blocks (52) before tackling her Mille quilt. If you go to the authors website and go to quiltalongs she has the directions for doing the Mille that you can download to save or print. There are 12 sections. You just have to have the book. I got my book last Friday at Joanns with a 60% off coupon so it was only 10.00 and some change. So far the blocks have been fairly easy.

Warbler, I have been looking at this book for a while, hoping price would come down. Are the template patterns in the book?

Geri B 05-02-2016 05:15 AM

Paperpieces.com is my go to place for epp supplies. Is that how your thinking on doing la pas...I understand she did it just handpieced...I would love to get the book, but that price is just over the moon......inklingo has a group doing la pass.

katja's is epp .... I have first rosette, still in package from paperpieces, but maybe next winters project.....

ManiacQuilter2 05-02-2016 06:33 AM

Too complicated for me. :(

KalamaQuilts 05-02-2016 06:36 AM

I've done both La Pas and the Katja Marek Millie last year.

Fussy cutting is a cinch with the acrylic shapes. You would probably only want to fussy cut one or two shapes in each rosette, otherwise your eyes would cross forever trying to look at the quilt :)

Onebyone 05-02-2016 09:55 AM

I am making it but I don't fussy cut the pieces. Mine is scrappy colors. I get bored with it and put it up but will get it out very so often and make a few more blocks before getting bored again. I have Willyne Hammerstein 's book, it's confusing to read for me.

Omg, when do you come up for air...both in same year! That is quite an accomplishment in my book.....

I'm working on a La Pass right now. Once I got started and settled on a needle and thread that work for me I think it is easy. I look at the pictures/diagrams more than the written instructions. This cog is going to be one of the large ones.

Geri B 05-02-2016 03:42 PM

mdegenhart - are you epp? Glue or thread basting? Looking good...

i am on a personal quest to try and get that book for less than $49.95..... So far no luck!

Mdegenhart 05-02-2016 05:26 PM

Epp & glue. Than you!

my girlfriend and many at our LQS is hooked on Millefiore and they are beautiful. I don't have enough time on my hands to tackle another project. It is like another complete addiction. LOL

The New Hexagon book is available at Barnes and Noble for about $16.50.

I am working on La Pass, it was my first ever epp, and my most intense fussy cutting (before I had done it occasionally but not like this, not repeats exactly and small pieces) It is very addictive and is easier then it looks.

I don't remember if this is my most recent group shot but it is close to it.

Another option you have is to go to Inklingo. She has somethings you might find helpful:http://www.lindafranz.com/blog/mille...nd-millefiori/.

Update: Linda also sells the Milliefiori books( http://lindafranz.com/shop/millefior...ori-quilts/171) and they are on sale. She can also fit both books in one envelope for shipping.

I forgot to mention that I am working on the Christmas Star Pattern from the first Milliefiori book.

I'm impressed with all the effort folk here have made in this quilt. I like the recommendation to fussy cut only a couple shapes in each rosette. That seems less daunting to me. I have done EPP before but saw the acute angles of the La Pass quilts and wondered how difficult they'd be. I also saw one, very stunning version, done in solids... so thinking my way to be brave in making my first rosette. I am also working on Dear Jane about 100 blocks done, had to put it aside to work on some family quilts but they are now close to completion. I think between DJ and La Pass, I'd have my hands full. :sew:

Amazon has the New Hexagon for $15.99 + $3.99 shipping or ~$20

No sale price...that is the price everyone else is asking.

paperpieces has the acrylic template pkg on sale for the millefiori by katja? I have that book.....
anyone working on patchwork of the crosses by Lucy Boston? That's another addictive jroject

Fleurty 05-17-2016 10:44 PM

My package of acrylic and paper templates from Massdrop.com should be arriving any day now. I'm going to try and do this without the book. I have done a small simple EPP project before but this one is a beast! The hardest thing for me to figure out is what theme or color scheme to go with. There are so many great pics online of all the variations on this quilt...I can't make up my mind.

Geri B 05-18-2016 05:29 AM

Well I have Katjas book, new hexagons, just recd acrylic cutting templates from paperpieces, have had rosette #1 pack from paperpieces, copied to thumb drive from Katjas website her directions for all parts of millefiore, downloaded an epp program from quiltpro (maybe not for this but others?) glue pen, fabric and that will be my next week starting project....I hope!

please explain mass drop. I went to site, signed up, found quilting, but could find priced things....just "vote"? I looked like it offered the same as I bought from paperpieces, but I couldn't find its price.....

theme, color way..if you look at most, they seem to be multicolored..no specific overall pattern....just what looks good in each rosette....jmho

Fleurty 05-18-2016 07:43 PM

I learned about Massdrop from this forum. Here's a great explanation for how it works. http://www.freshlypieced.com/2015/02...pplies-on.html

Once a drop has ended they remove the end price off the site to protect the vendor. If you're interested in a former "drop" you can request for it and they may release a similar deal again. It's a little confusing and it wasn't until I tried it that I figured it out. It's really become a bit addictive and I have been happy with the delivery of the product and open communication with the staff.

Fleurty 05-18-2016 08:45 PM

I like how the use of white throughout the quilt acts as a unifying element. It looks lovely!

lynnie 05-19-2016 12:08 PM

mdegenhart, your rosette is glorious!!!

Mdegenhart 05-19-2016 04:09 PM

Thank you! It is going to be gaudy, gaudy, gaudy with all the "sari inspired" fabric.

QuiltnLady1 05-19-2016 09:42 PM

Here is a link to some hints about the quilt: http://www.lovepatchworkandquilting....ndoutFINAL.pdf

Oh my, La Pass is so pretty. I am truly intrigued....

Bellamina 07-28-2016 01:35 AM

I got both of Hammerstein's millefiori books from the publisher's US store (www.quiltmania-inc.us) for $40 each. The staff were very helpful.
