Anything I can do?
I fell ice skating Saturday which sprained my right wrist terribly. I cannot use my right hand at all.
This ruined my quilting weekend. Can you think of any quilty things I can do? I thought about reorganizing my thread collection. Maybe sew together charm squares into a simple top? (I can't press though) Any ideas? It is bad enough I can't ice skate for awhile, but when I realized I also can't quilt- UGH! |
Sort through your scraps, organizing by size or color? match fabrics for a future quilt? I was laid up with a break for two months, couldn't walk or use my machine but i did get alot of fabric cut for tops.
|
Organizing scraps is a good possibility.
I wish I could cut- I just got a dresden plate ruler, but that is out :( However, I can walk- so I'm not doing so badly... |
Can you use your left hand? How about designing your next quilt? That's what I did when I
could not sew for a few months. I have carpal tunnel and I'm right-handed but I use my left hand when I'm on the computer. It sure helps balance things out. Hope you feel better soon. |
If you have any of the "EQ"'s, plan a few quilts....good luck!
|
orgainizing your stash and planning your next quilt sound like excelant ideas... so sorry you got hurt like that... I sprained both my wrists one time... OUCH!!! It will get better, but you have to take care of it
|
Sorry that this happened to you. All I can suggest is what "bakermom" did. Also, you can go on this quilting forum and read all the posts. This should use up quite a few hours. Sometimes I just google "quilting" and it brings me to a variety of things to read and get interested in. Hope this helps and that you will be on the mend very soon and can get back to your love of quilting. I too had a bad fall Dec.5th, nothing broken I'm happy to say, just lots of bruises. However, after about a month, I started having problems with headaches and severe neck pain. Evidentally, the fall aggravated an old neck injury and now I am in therapy three times a week. Surely hope that it gets better soon. I know how you feel, as I cannot do too much as it aggravates the pain. Really getting bored, as I'm not one to sit around, like to keep busy. Good Luck.

I'm right handed so I wouldn't be able to do anything but read. No housework either.

design, shop, design.

Sorry for u. Read a great quilt mystery or magazine or search on the web for ideas, take care of yourself.
|
I would look through books and magazines and plan the next project, it will be something to look forward to.

Do you have anyone to help you? Pajamas can get pretty old, fast. Organizing fabric was a thought, but how about some sorting in drawers and closets? I always feel better when I have "detrashed" something. Just remember to take care of you. Might be a time for some of those bubble baths that we all dream about.

I like DebraK's idea, design shop design!
|
When I broke both bones in my right wrist and then had to have surgery on it a couple of weeks later, I was losing my mind! Couldn't work and couldn't sew for 2 1/2 months. I drew quilts on graph paper (no EQ, but graph paper has always been my best friend) and cross stitched some quilt labels with my left hand. Organized and chose fabrics for the drawings. Lost my job and went to PT. And couldn't even open a can of tuna. My thoughts are with you. Putting together combinations of scraps and pieces from your stash might brighten your day for a while. Get better soon!

there are some good sewing and quilting videos on U-tube you might watch. Also pbs online. I like to browse Antiques Roadshow. sometimes they have really old or different quilts on there! Watching isn't sewing I know but better than the walls or ceiling.
Also have you tried electric scissors? I draw my pattern on the fabric then just buzz along the lines. Not as good as rotary cutting but better than nothing sometimes. |
This forum, Google and Youtube. Get better soon and take care of yourself.

Sounds like now would be a good time to get in some practice using and strengthening that left hand! That's what I had to do when I broke my right hand years ago. Discovered that eventually I was pretty good with a lot of things with my 'off' hand. Signing my name was, shall we say 'interesting' however. LOL!
Here's hoping your hand/wrist heals quickly. |

You might try sewing odd scraps together for a crazy quilt. Just sew a lot of them in no particular shape but enough to make large blocks. You can trim them and iron later.

Doing something like needle punch or needle felting could be done with your left hand...
|
My left hand (dominant) is in a splint for carpel tunnel and right hand will have trigger finger surgery the end of this month. It stinks to have both hands achy at the same time. I look forward to some down time to review that ever growing bucket list for the next great project and weeding out those that no longer grab my attention. Take care and get well soon!

If you have quilt books or magazines or even internet sites, you might find your next quilt idea while recovering.

I am sorry for your accident, it has been a while since I have been on skates, really envy you. I had my right arm in a cast for about six weeks, a few years ago, it was the pits!! I found that there were several things that I could do with my left arm though..keep trying. How fortunate you are to have a kindle, I love mine. I am afraid that I would spend way too much time reading and not feeling at all guilty. Hope you are on the mend.

You probably need to immobile your wrist to give it a rest, if you can go to a physio's office, and pick up a arm brace
that the strap wraps around your thumb and the brace travels up the arm to the joint in your elbow, which supports your wrist right up to your elbow, (the closure is velcro), this is what happened to me per my Doctors advice. It really made a difference, I found I could do a lot more things when wearing the brace, now I have a brace for each arm. So sorry this happened to you, and hopefully it will be feeling better real soon. Try spend many of your hours checking out various quilting videos on the web, you know how quickly time flys doing that, and - you can use your left hand with the mouse. Best Wishes!!! |
Relax and mend. Watch quilting shows on TV or DVDs. Read, I hear the end of February Elm Creek Quilts will have a new novel. Enjoy and take it easy. You will mend faster than you think. Again enjoy.
