Applique - flowers - and now the fillers!
 

So I have marked most of the fillers that I am doing, and have done the echo on the flowers. Still have to mark the corners

I'm not a fan of the first filler right above the middle block. I'm probably going to do something else

If anyone has any other ideas on what to do for the background of the flowers, I'm all ears (or eyes LOL) ... I'm looking for small detailed fillers, and I'm trying not to do repeats!

Thanks for all the advice from the last thread, as you can see I used it - they are all appliqued on, and I used the method that RhondaK suggested - much faster!

Is your purpose in this wallhanging to practice different fillers? I ask because some duplication behind the 4 corner flowers would bring unity to the piece. I hate to tell you this because it is already marked, but I would change the fill you have 2nd from the top in the middle. The density is so different from the others that it looks odd to my eye. Either put more fill in that one with the zig zags or use the zig zag filler to go behind every flower in the corners and use a different fill that is more dense, like your others in that space. Most of your other designs appear grid based in the other squares so maybe stick with another grid based design there instead.

Judi Madsen of Green Fairy quilts does fabulous ruler fills behind applique that look great. She has pictures on her blog, instagram and pinterest. Just google images of either Judi Madsen quilting or Green Fairy and you should get loads of ideas.

Another quilter that does great grid based, dense fills is Margaret Solomon Gunn. You can do the same to see images of her stuff. Here's two pics to show ... one is the "replacement pic" of the filler because I didn't like it, and feline was right!

And the second is the background that I am going to use for all four corners ...

Next question ... should I do a feathered border? Or keep it geometric?

I'm hoping for feathers LOL but will take all advice into serious consideration!

feline fanatic has said everything I was thinking. Repeating the some of the fills is what pulls everything together. Consistency in the density is also important. Many quilters use about 3 fills to repeat.

Judy Madsen is a Master quilter and uses more technical designs. You can get great ideas from her. For someone that does more loose quilting, you could youtube Angela Walters.

I have purchased Judy Madsen classes on iQuilt. I was very happy with my results. She gives you a pattern so you are quilting exactly what/where she does. I did her two examples, then made a small quilt and quilted it with my own ideas. I have purchased another of her classes but have not been able to do the quilting yet. I am anxious to do be able to get to them. :-). After Christmas.

Marion--I do like the background on your applique flowers in the 2nd picture, I think Feline's suggestions are good too. Several of the national LA quilters also do a small swirl, echoed and then some smaller pebbling around it--nice for applique. I think the fill in the first picture above the center is too big of a design compared to the others. I'll try to send a picture of a whole cloth that I did trying to use many different fills.[ATTACH=CONFIG]605423[/ATTACH] not a great picture (bad lighting) but I did use a bunch of different fills!
