Applique Issue
Hello! I just completed a hexagonal table topper which has cut applique pieces with WonderUnder applied, sewn to 'quilt top' and then quilted over. Now is probably the wrong time to ask, but I just cut the applique pieces raw and applied them (as pattern suggested) without a turned back hem and now I fear the appliques will fray. Is there anything I can put on these pieces to keep them from fraying? I'm afraid Fray Check will be too hard.
Hope I made myself clear on this. Thanks! |
you made yourself very clear.
in my own experience, all the fusibles promise no frays, but i always do get fraying. fray check or fray block are your only options at this point. neither of them stays hard after washing. i can't promise either of them will completely prevent frays. i would also add blanket stitching around the appliques, or [best] satin stitching. |
If you used batiks, the fraying will be slight. If you used regular cotton the edges will fray. Fraying can give a nice effect, I just outline quilt 1/8 inside the pieces to secure them and it prevent fraying past the stitching.
