You could try http://www.urbanthreads.com/, not your normal bird and flower type of place...lol

teric 05-22-2013 12:33 PM

Also try http://www.emblibrary.com/....all different kinds of things.....

You can probably learn everything you need from the internet. I have made several by using coloring book pages (also found on the internet. I have done disney...trains. planes...flowers also :)

>>I"M NOT A BIRD & FLOWER KINDA GIRLI"M NOT A BIRD & FLOWER KINDA GIRL<<

I'm not either. I did an alphabet animal quilt. I found animal patterns (or what I turned into animal patterns) in lots of different places. I bought some cheap childrens' coloring books. I searched for animal coloring pages on the internet. And when nothing else worked, I got a photo and did an outline of it and used that. I had a hard time finding an animal for X (I searched the dictionary, and found xeme, an arctic gull). I couldn't find a pattern I could use for a yak, so I used a pattern I'd found for ox, and added a hairy stomach. For V, I used a cutout of a vulture photo.

I had the same problem finding redwork patterns. ( and since I don't like red, I wanted to do them in blue). All the patterns for those were flowery. I found some embroidery patterns for cats. I found coloring pages. I will probably eventually do a quilt of all red(blue or maybe black)work in cats.

Craftsy has a great class on machine quilting. Mind you it is flowers but a great way to learn the technique and then branch out. The gal who teaches it has a great book out as well on the technique and some patterns.

danlynmartin 05-22-2013 02:54 PM

Whoops! I meant machine applique. They also have great machine quilting classes as well.

Absolutely. If you can't draw you can search for free coloring pages and trace off what ever you want. And free coloring pages exist for just about anything you can think of. A search engine is an appliquer's best friend.

I have found searching an idea in Google-Images can come up with all kinds of stuff, ideas. Example - type in "Cats" and you'll come up with some fun ideas.

I have been to Pearl Louise's shop in Rapid City, SD and it is like stepping into blanket stitch heaven. Her shop is in an old two story house, and one room is dedicated just for snow men. Our guild is attending the Rapid City Quilt show in June, and one of my highlights will be going there. Maybe I will splurge and buy one of her kits.

I agree with the Fatcatpatterns.com, Sindy has been designing
applique patterns for years they are awesome.

I am going to do a Dresden plate in patriotic colors and the centers are going to be stars. I will print them from Clip Art off the computer or just cut stars out of fabric to make the appliques. Sometimes I buy things in the dollar store to trace and make templates from. I did a shamrock and a heart in this manner, Once you start looking you will find all kinds of applique material.

I don't have time to read the whole post and don't know if it has already been mentioned, but I always wondered if a beginners color book would be a good source. You know, the first coloring book for a child. They usually have bold and simplistic pictures without a lot of jigs and jags.I haven't personally tried since I have not done applique (maybe some day - way too many irons in the fire right now ha ha ha) What do you think?

Suz 05-23-2013 05:11 AM

I suggest Edyta Sitar patterns.

I agree.....love, love her designs.

You could go to the library and get woodworking patterns -copy them. They are very basic and much like color books and have all things you can imagine. And maybe some you haven't thought of. It doesn't matter if the books are recent are new or old.

i put music notes and G clef on my quilt

Donnamarie 05-23-2013 06:04 AM

You can applique anything at all. If you want some simple patterns, try a kids coloring book. You can simplify most patterns to meet your taste. Good luck! I just love applique, welcome to the club!

Absolutely! Dover Press has a lot of designs in their "coloring" books. I have about 10 which I use for design ideas, sometimes actually using the pictures as they are. The suggestion that you want to learn to applique.... You read up on the different methods and decide which you want to use (or perhaps try them all on a simple design and choose your favorite, which will probably change for different effects... but probably not on a single quilt).

Put "applique" into the box in the upper right hand corner of any QB page and you'll find all the advice you'd ever want!!!

I have seen some beautiful Sunbonnet Sue appliqued (machine). The book I have has patterns for baby quilts, wall hangings and a full-size quilt. What's really fun is to increase the size of the pattern pieces, increase the block sizes to accommodate the larager pattern pieces, then double the number of blocks to make your quilt a very nice size. A baby quilt 28" X 36" just seems far too small to me! The book of Sunbonnet Sue patterns I have is 10-12 years old and I don't remember the name of it -- I'm working today and it's at home! I'll try to look it up tonight and get back in touch with you.

6 Attachment(s)
McKenna Ryan, Toni Whitney, Country Quilts, Bee Creative, Pine Meadow, so many more as welol as wood carving and stained glass patterns. What exactly would you like to make??

charsuewilson 05-24-2013 06:46 AM

There's also cookie cutters, the foam and wooden shapes at craft stores. Sewing patterns that have appliques on them (e.g., a girl's t-shirt with a pony on it). Check all craft patterns (I see Free patterns for crafts - www.crazyforcrafts.com - at the bottom of the page as I type). Check stained glass window patterns, wood cutout patterns.

I have been staring at this one all morning......

What about circles? Celtic images would applique well, and tile patterns would too. There is a prize winning pattern out there based on mexican plates I think. P3 is a lady who is makeing baltimore type blocks for each state. Texas has the Alamo, they usually have the state bird or flower, so sorry about that, but it is a variety of images, tall ships, steam engines etc. There is another book out there that does variations on hearts. You could hit amazon and google Applique and see if there is anything that strikes your fancy.

Bigfork Bay Cotton Company is some fantastic designs!

Laser-cut applique is the way to go!!! Stitchin' Heaven has some really fun laser cut (and already fused) applique kits. Quilt Diva is super cute, Holiday Houses is AWESOME, Stitchin' Addiction is a new one that I plan to complete soon! Lots of fun options besides your typical nature or flowers. Look here: http://store.stitchinheaven.com/stor...Laser-Cut+Kits

earthwalker 07-30-2013 08:14 PM

Dover Publications www.doverpublications.com is a great source for all kinds of coloring books and clip art. All legally copyable. I just take them to my copy store and have them increased to the size I want. As Nan said, more than I could ever use but I am still collecting.
