Applique question about thread
1 Attachment(s)
Hello fellow quilters. I've been quilting for a little over a year now. I'm working on my first appliqué for a medallion center of a quilt. I am wondering if there are any rules of thumb about the color of thread to use when the fabric has two dominant color hues. Would you use the lighter or darker thread? Thanks so much for your advice.

I would go for the lighter because that seems to be the dominate colour - just as a tip, if I am using lots of colours I tend to use a pale grey seems to disappear and I use silk thread or a very fine one which also helps.

I agree with janedee. Your fabrics are beautiful!!

I would do just what you did - lay a strand of both colors over the applique, and decide which one disappears the best. To me, it looks like the lighter strand.

Thank you all so very much. The lighter color it will be. And I will keep all of your tips in mind when making future thread color choices. By the way, I have spent many days tracing, cutting, and starching all the pieces and parts. This morning I get to start threading needles and stitching. Do you have any idea how excited I am right now?

Well, what I was told is the opposite of what everyone has said. Dark colors receed and light colors pop out. When in doubt use the darker. I would also consider something in between the two, a medium brown. You could try them both, sew an inch of each and see what you think.
