applique question

I am making a 36" square table topper. It will have appliqued flowers, vines & leaves around the sides. I have lots of fusible fleece pieces left over from making several Bow Tucks purses. Can I use fusible fleece for the appliques instead of fusible web?

Depends on how you plan on finishing the edges...If you're going to satin stitch the edges it should be fine but any other open stitch like a blanket stitch I think will allow the fleece to show since it's thicker. It will certainly make your applique pieces pop!

think about what table the topper will be used on also- using fleece will add (loft) so if you set anything on the topper the surface will be quite uneven-things will probably fall over- regular fusable does not add any thickness to the project-

I wouldn't personally...I think that it will give you loft where you don't want (or need) it...

Thanks for the answers. The topper has a large center square where you would probably set something & the applique is around the edges of the topper. I may try using the fleece just to see what it will do on a piece of scrap fabric. My machine has a blanket stitch, but no satin stitch and I think I would have to fold the fabric over & under the fleece to hide it. That might not work so well with the points on the holly leaves. I guess I will be going to the store today :)

Debbie B, if your machine has zig-zag it is essentially the same thing when spaced correctly (almost zero) as a satin stitch. I zig-zagged for years before I owned a machine with a satin stitch. And, unless you want a trapunto kind of look, I wouldn't use fleece for fusible web. Just MHO
