I need advice on how I'm supposed to get my applique pattern onto the fusuble stuff and cut it out. Are there any good tricks or did the woman who was trying to explain it to me make it sound WAY too difficult. She kept telling me I needed to make a template, cut out my fabric, then fuse it to the Steam-a-seam (or Wonder Under, or whatever the stuff was). I got a little worried after the template thing and wondered if I wanted to applique after all.

I've never used a template. Just trace what you want on to the wonder under and then fuse it to the fabric and cut out on the lines. You can use a window or a light box to trace your pattern and make sure you have it going the way you want.

I rough cut around the fabric piece and then cut a slightly smaller piece of the Wonder Under and fuse it together and then cut out the shape. It's way easier to cut with the extra stiffness.

I trace the applique pattern onto the fusible webbing, then iron webbing to fabric. You are now ready to cut the pattern out and fuse to quilt block.

Thank you so much for the advice ladies. This sounds much easier than was explained earlier today. I do a lot of technical work but couldn't follow this person's instructions. Go figure. Maybe I just wasn't asking the right questions.

First of all, be sure your applique pattern is reversed since you will be fusing on the WRONG side of the fabric. I only make templates if I have a lot of the same shape to make, otherwise just trace the pattern on the paper side of the fusible product using a pencil or a permanent extra-fine marker. (I make plastic templates for repeated shapes like leaves, etc. and just trace around the template.) It helps to trace all the pieces using the same fabric as a group so you can fuse that to a larger piece of fabric and then cut out the individual pieces. Anyway, after tracing your pattern, cut the fusible product apart as needed - rough cutting around the traced pieces. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the fusible product to fuse to the wrong side of the fabric. At this point, cut on the line around your pattern pieces. I like to leave the paper on the pieces until I'm ready to fuse the applique to the background fabric. (Simply fold and crease the fabric and paper to the paper side and the paper should be easy to release - if not, scratch the paper with a straight pin to score it slightly and you can peel it off.) Arrange the applique pieces, right side up, on your background and fuse, again following the manu. directions (they all vary) If you have small pieces it helps to hold them in place with a long straight pin or even a hat pin when fusing. Just took a class from Sue Nichels, shes an expert LOL, copy pattern on the paper side of fusible....iron to the BACK of fabric..cut out and fuse to background. If you need to reverse the pattern you will need to do that before tracing to fusible..some patterns come already reversed...it usually tells you
