Applique Stabilizer Question
 

I will be teaching an applique class in January, and was wondering if any of you appique'rs could recommend a water soluble stabilizer? I don't want to use freezer paper for this project I will be teaching. I saw something on the "Create For Less" website, called Handlers Rinseaway Nonwoven Stabilizer, but am not familiar with it. TIA for any suggestions.

I've always used Sulky water soluble. It was the one my machine dealer recommended, taught us with in our new machine owners classes, worked great & I've stuck with it.

I only know of Sulky water soluble.

I've used Vilene, badge master & solvy. Don't really have a preference. All worked well. I get most of my stablizers from all stitch. Here's a link to their water solubles:

Sulky Solvy works. I'd just order a small amount of whatever you're thinking of using to make sure you can stitch through it easily enough. Our guild is making a raffle quilt & people wanted to do the stabilizer method (only a couple of us actually do applique -- most of our guild only does piecing) but the pieces varied between 3/4" - 1.25" x 1-2.5" so it just ended up being really bulky to try and stitch through so we ended up going raw edge fusible (H&B Lite) with a satin stitch. Solvy works nice with larger pieces as long as you aren't using a very thin white fabric as the fibers can sometimes show through a bit.

If you use a washaway, you'll have to adhere it to the fabric. There is a temporary spray glue that people use to adhere vilene to fabric like 505. They do have a sticky washaway that wouldn't require the spray glue, but I think it's expensive. There are a variety of washaways at this site.

Purple Daisies or Sharon Schamber make a dissolving product that is great. There is a similar product called Wash-Away Applique that can go through an ink jet printer and will iron on.
