I'm doing my first applique in years. I am putting a princcess on the top of a quilt (from the MODA bake shop patter of the Princess and the Pea). I can't figure out what stitch to use to complete the applique. Any suggestions? I can't tell from the pattern photos what they used. It's for a baby, so I don't want to use monofilament thread. I have a really pretty pink to use.

Here is the pattern and photo:

I appreciate any input!

It looks to be machine done using the blanket or applique stitch

Looks like blanket stitch to me .... Can machines do that???? (she asks incredulously....this woman is still in the dark ages sewing machine-wise).

I usually use satin stitch on children's quilts as they'll probably be washed quite often. Bonding & then machine stitching with the blanket or buttonhole stitching does let the edges fray a little between the stitches. Maybe do a small practice piece & see which stitch you prefer on your machine.

My machine has a very nice blanket stitch. Still like to do it by hand at times though.

I think a tight zig-zag should do the trick as well.

Madquilter - I know you have Pfaff machines from previous posts...what would you use for a satin stitch? I have a QE2046, and all of my satins appear to have a shape. I don't see straight satin stitch - am I missing something?

I ending up using the blanket stitch and it looks fine. Lots of mistakes, but live and learn!!

Thanks all for your suggestions.

On most machines, a satin stitch can be made with a normal zig-zag stitch and shortening the stitch length. Similar to how the older machines did button holes.

Looks like the blanket stitch to me too.

Looks like fun! I did a commission piece years ago with the same theme. My princess sat atop mattresses decorated in antique lace and trims, staring out the castle window at the moon beyond. That was in the days before digital cameras, so I hope it is still around somewhere.
