Do you use a single thread or do you double it when appliquing? Also, are you picky about your thread or would a regular poly work for you? I use poly and have very little trouble burying it so one can't see it.

i use single poly matching the applique piece

I use a single strand of silk thread usually matching colour of the piece although a pale grey tends to disappear very well

I like silk, but I do use a double thread.

I use anything and sometimes the thread is actually part of the design. Which means i may use varigated or contrast colors.

Depends on the finished effect I want. If it is a blanket stitch I may use embroidery floss. If it is hand applique where I don't want the stitches to show I use a single strand of silk thread and use the same tonal hue as the applique piece. So I only need about 5 spools of silk ranging from very light to very dark.

Concur with what feline fanatic said - except I do use the YLI #100 silk thread and match silk thread color with the piece being appliqued on to the background. If I don't have a close match (go darker rather than light - it will show less as the darker doesn't have light bouncing off of it.
