I took an applique class and used freezer paper, ironed on fabric, then sewed on quilt square. Then when I got home I wondered Can you wash the square with freezer paper between the fabric? It's probably a crazy question but just wondered. I am new at applique, it's the first time I've ever done this. All replies would be appreciated.

Nope, you have to remove the paper, by cutting the back of the quilt top. Cant believe they didn't tell you this. Here's a tutorial that doesnt leave the paper in. http://colorsall.wordpress.com/2008/...ique-tutorial/

There is also a product called appliqué fibers that you can leave in. You can machine appliqué it on if you glue the fiber clear to the edge. I used it in needle turn appliqué . I just cut the fabric larger than the fiber product to create a seam allowance. You glue the fabric to it with water based glue. Then when finished with the block hand wash in synthrapol. It leaves just a little fiber behind to give dimension to appliqué but no stiffness.

Leathaflea is correct you have to carefully snip the back of the quilt and use forceps to remove the paper, and usually you cut away the excess fabric as well so it is not too bulky

Many applique-ers sew most of the piece down, then pull the freezer paper out before they close off the rest of the piece. This keeps from having to slit the back.

I don't use freezer paper I use the back basting method but the tute below is good. One thing though. I'd use washable school glue instead of what she's using because what she uses has been known to get hard. If you use what she is make sure to add a few drops of water to wash it out. I love doing hand applique; it's so relaxing and I have a great teacher. We are just finishing up a project and next we are doing 3D flowers and then baskets; I'm so excited.
