Applique

Hi
I am ready to try to do an applique for a Baby's quilts - how does an applique do during machine washings?
I am thinking that this method may not be good for something that will be washed at lot. What are your thoughts?
Thanks
NormaBeth:)

I've appliqued a lot on kids clothing, and it has always held up well. I'd be sure to use a good quality thread, and have started to always use Steam A Seam Lite 2 for my appliques.

My young grandson wears appliqued clothing all the time. I use a cut-a-way stabilizer so it will hold it's shape.

I made appliqued quilts for each of my grandchildren when they were born. My 20 yr old granddaughter used to drag hers everywhere with her until she was about 13, sleep overs, camping, you name it. She still used it everyday - slept with it. It was getting rather dogearred by then - most of the backing was gone, corners were non existent. Her quilt has been washed at least twice a month for all these years. She still has the quilt but doesn't sleep with it anymore, she is living with her BF & that just wouldn't be cool!

You didn't mention what kind of applique you plan to do. If it is well done needle turn applique then it will hold up as long as the hand stitching and material does. If it is machine applique with a fusible and satin stitched edges, then very well. If it is machine applique with a fusible with buttonhole or raw edge applique not quite as well.

it depends on what kind of applique you are planning on doing- if doing raw-edge applique with a fusable the appliques still have to be sewn down- if doing needle turn you may not want it to be laundered (harshly) mainly because of the amount of work involved-
many of us applique kids quilts all the time-they hold up just fine as long as they are stitched down correctly
