Applique tree
I plan to make this pattern but use it on a table runner.
http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2009/10...ll-pillow.html The maker of this quilt used fusible webbing for the leaves and then sewed around on top of the leaves, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch inside the edges. Won't the fabric ravel eventually? Also, if I do a blanket stitch or zigzag around the edges do you think I have to change colors for each leaf or use the same thread for all the leaves? My colors will be a little bit more vibrant than those shown--golds, greens, purples, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Yes, the fabrics will ravel a little. Raw edge appliqué is done for the edges to ravel but batiks ravel less then regular cotton. You can switch colours between leaves but if you can find a varigated thread with your colour combo of leaves, it would be ideal. If it is to be an art piece, you could use invisible thread for appliqueing them down.

The raveling of the raw edge applique adds dimension to the piece and is desired for interest and texture. Might be kind of interesting in your piece!
