For those who have a membership to AQS, what are some of the benefits that you get from it? I don't live close enough to attend the quilt shows. I'm wondering if it is worth the membership fee.

sueisallaboutquilts 09-08-2011 01:36 PM

I don't have one anymore. It wasn't anything that thrilled me.

Only the extra 10% off at Joanns and one of the LQS I visit give the 10% also.

Otherwise there is really no benefit. I get a magazine that I am not even crazy about and I got a 2 dollar discount at the show, which I wasn't crazy about either.

I think the magazine alone is worth the cost of membership. You usually get some freebies when you join, such as a couple of books.

Ann912 09-08-2011 01:41 PM

I dropped my membership. I didn't think it was of much benefit.

Maggiesmom 09-08-2011 01:43 PM

I gave up my membership several years ago. I found no real benefit from having it and I was 35 miles away from going to show. You can invest the same in a Quilting Magazine and get more for your money. Most shops give you a discount if you belong to a guild and you can buy most books on line cheaper than with the discount you get from AQS.

I love the magazine. So much good stuff in it. I'll never try most of it but Just to see the creativity is so inspiring.

Right now they're offering a free book. I think I got 2 free books when I joined (maybe because it was a multi-year membership?), and another one or two when I continued the membership. The current membership offerings are here: http://www.americanquilter.com/membe...rces/index.php

I belonged (is that a word?) for over 10 yrs & I never got any thrills out of their magazines & didn't see much benefit to it either. One time I joined I did get a free pair of AWESOME scissors but the other stuff just isn't worth it.

I joined earlier this year and took advantage of the free book offer for joining mainly because I was looking at purchasing that particular book anyway. The weekly e-newsletters usually have something that I save to an e-file, usually an article or free pattern. I'm not real big on buying books....don't need to accumulate more "stuff"....but I have bought a couple of e-books that they offer for out-of-print books. Member's discount is nice, too.

I agree...I really like their magazine, and the 10% off at JoAnn is a bonus...even a $ or $$ is a savings. It costs the same as a magazine subscription, and you get it back if you buy enough fabric!! :-)

You are eligible to attend their annual quilt retreat. this year it is held at Lake of the Ozarks.

Peckish 09-08-2011 03:04 PM

I'm one that let my membership lapse. I originally joined because I went to the show in Paducah. I didn't care much for the magazine, rarely shop at Joann's, and don't use the 10% discount off rental cars. There was another discount given, but I can't remember what it was for. I did get a free quilting book, but it was NOTHING that I would ever try or use, so I gave it away.

Raggiemom 09-08-2011 03:09 PM

I bought a membership to save the 10% at Joanns. However, if an item is on sale, my Joanns' won't give the 10% off it. So I think it was a waste of my money. But that's just my opinion!

chiaraquilts 09-09-2011 12:37 PM

I have been a member for a few years and like it- enjoy the magazine, and the discounts, and the freebies are fun. Also, access to tons of patterns on their website. Overall, worth the cost.

The 10% is supposed to be good on sale items, but not on items for which you use a coupon.
