I am taking a class for the around world quilt. Homework this week was to sew all 4in strips together, make a tube, then cut into 2.5in. strips. When I make the tube, my fabric doesn't lay flat. Obviously, I did something wrong. I am afraid to sew strip #1 to the last strip and cut. What should I do?

I just yesterday bought and downloaded the pattern and the directions make no sense to me. I emailed the website and they were great about responding and trying to help. This "tube" idea makes no sense. I hate to cut the fabric and chance ruining it. Good luck with yours.

Is it "flat" before you sew it into a tube? I would not believe that it would be flat once it is sewn into the tube shape. I myself would go for it - but, if you are unsure - contact you instructor.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try the email. Good luck with your quilt.

yes it is flat before the tube. I guess my strips are not straight...I made one tube in class last Thursday, and it was perfect. The next 10 tubes I made yesterday - not so perfect!

My guess would be that your strips are not straight. I would measure in several spots along the strips and you will probably find where it is off. I doesn't have to be off by very much to cause a problem. By that I mean you probably can't see the problem. Hope you can fix it, I know how frustrating that can be.

Did you reverse the sewing direction of every other strip? If you sew every strip in the same direction, the strips will be distorted by the feed dogs. It's minor, but it adds up.

Eleanor Burns Quick Trip Quilts. You sew 4 in. strips together (12 of them). Then you sew strip #1 to strip #12 making the tube. It doesn't hang straight or lay flat. That's what I'm worried about. I'm afraid to cut the tube into the 2.5 in strips because I'm afraid I've got the strips crooked.

Oh no! I sewed them all in the same direction! That's probably what's wrong. Thank you for your answer.
