My introduction to art quilting was via this lovely, brilliant, artistic woman: http://artwithaneedle.blogspot.com/

Kathy is the mother of a friend of mine. She's so amazing that I find art quilting intimidating! Nothing I can imagine would hold a candle to her works that have shown all over the globe.

Lovely photos everyone!

Thanks Dixie. I subscribed to her blog. Yes, her photos are wonderful.

Quilting Arts magazine is also a fantastic resource. There are techniques and projects in every issue and the website has more than 20 free eBooks which are actually collections of past articles on a particular subject (e.g., fabric painting, binding & finishing, image transfer & photo quilts, etc). I can't provide a link to it due to QB's 'non-competitive' rule, but it's easy enough to find.

I heartily agree. Quilting Arts is at the top of my list of favorite magazines. I do not throw out or give away a single issue. The TV series is also available on DVDs, which are another wonderful source of inspiration and instruction.

South Bound ... I Wish!

Here's my latest art quilt. A small 12" X 12" theme piece based on the word South. It was my first attempt at freestyle designing a curved, foundation piece flying geese pattern. I fused applique geese Sillouettes for a realistic contrast. My beginning point was cutting out the geese and then finding the appropriate background fabric to fuse them to. That's when I decided I wanted the descending foundation pieced path to indicate a flock of south bound geese. In Alaska we have had almost 7 feet of snow since late October - a record breaker here - so I'm truly feeling the urge to be South Bound.

What have the rest of you been art quilting? Don't be shy. Show & Tell please.

Thanks for your positive feedback on my South Bound art quilt. This photo was taken from my back deck and is typical of our beautiful sunsets here in Alaska. It was the inspiration for my background fabric.

OK! so how do you define an "ART QUILT" or an "ART QUILTER"?

Is it applique", is it the "thread art" on the quilt top? Is it because it looks like "modern art"? I've seen too many variations of what folks call an "Art QUilt".... would really like to know. I may even , but probably not, fall into that category.
