asking your opinion
I have been collecting mens ties for a while. and buy them at garage sales for a reasonable price (thrift shops here are not reasonable $3 ea). anyway, a lady I quilt with gave me her husbands ties for me to do with whatever.....he is in a nursing home with dementia. I didn't feel right about taking the ties so I cut them up and started to make the Dresden plate with the ties and when its finished I will give it to her. question is, what do you think I should do w/the center space. I thought about putting her and her husbands name and wedding date; or cut up the ties and make a collage of color for the center; could leave it plain. what do you think?

Maybe her favorite color?

How about putting a solid dark color in the center, like navy, burgundy or hunter green. Men's ties often have a navy in them, then quilting a design. I made a tie quilt and the striped ties were really all the pattern needed. But that's just my thought.

If you are thinking of making her a Dresden plate wall hanging, I'd say use a center that has their names and wedding date--a really nice memoir for her. Then you could probably use the rest of the ties she gave you for your own quilt.

can you make the center of one of his old suits?
then embroider their names or initials. I think that's sweet of you to make this for her. |
It would depend on how many and size. If large then wedding day, birthday , children grandchildren etc. You could instead of cutting a suite us handkerchiefs.

it is a surprise so I cant ask for a suite. besides that's just too much!
a piece of fabric is fine. |
I wouldn't put anything personal on the quilt except the label. She just might say thank you but you should keep it and really mean it.

How large is the center space? Maybe just their initials and wedding date would fit better. I love the idea of gifting them back to her in something she can cherish of his.
