Attaching borders
When you attach borders, do you press them toward the outside or inside?
I press mine to the outside but recently read they should be pressed toward the inside of the quilt but it didn't say why. So, how do you press borders? Thanks, Joan |
I usually press the pieced edge toward the border (or sashing ) - less bulky that way. If multiple borders, then I tend to press each seam toward the darker color.

I press toward the border. Like Mom-6 says that cuts down on bulk.
I always read to press toward the border.
Me too... press to the border.
Do whatever works for your quilt. If you had a one fabric inner border and then piano key (or heavily pieced) outer border, I would press toward the center. Usually I press out because it is usually less bulky.
I don't think there is a "right" or "wrong" way. I usually press towards the border. May do differently if doing a pieced border, or if the border is a lighter fabric.
I press sashings and borders to the dark side if needed. Sometimes I press to the side of least resistance if I have a lot of seams going one way. I like a nice flat top so whatever achieves that, is the way I press my seams.
It would depend on the size of border for me . An inch or less border has less room in . Does anyone use the open seam?
I press open, as it lays flatter . No set rules , do what works or gives you the desired outcome.
