I watched the Aunt Becky Quilting Tool being demonstrated this morning on QuiltTV. Has anyone here used this tool for hand quilting and if so would you recommend this?

That was an interesting video! I would like to try it.

Well I have one :oops: I used it a little at first, but could only really manage when doing straight lines, so if I was quilting around appliqué or a curved line I had to do without it, it's still sitting here in my sewing basket but unless you spend hours just sitting quilting, it's hard to get into the rhythm (for me)

I got Aunt Becky and the hop for Christmas last year. I have played with it and still need more practise but it is fun to learn and the stitches do seem to be evener using it. I learned to put fingers from some disposable gloves on my pointer and thum on my right hand to pull the needle with the gathered stitches.

I had seen the Aunt Becky's tool in a quilt shop but never seen it used. The video was very informational. I am a handquilter for hire and I just might try it. The older I get the harder it is for me to make my stitches small and even. I use a leather thimble on my right hand and a smaller leather thimble on my left thumb. I also qult with both hands. That allows me to go in opposite directions without bending my wrist in such awkard postions. I suffer from carpal tunnel but only really badly on occasion.

I'll let you know how much luck I have after I purchase the needed items.

I found the Aunt Becky Quilting Tool at the local Fabric Hut in Norfolk, Va today and snapped it up. I have a top that I am in the process of constructing so I'm hoping to try it out on that. Will let ya'll know how I do when I get to that point.

I need to watch the video again before I get started though..... :wink:

As far as adapting a hoop goes, make sure you use a very light weight base. I purchased a local one & the base was like 3/4" and very heavy...also make sure it's under a warranty....mine cracked & part of the base "fell off" so I was left with a partial circle rather than the full. My friend has the one pictured & loves it....but she paid alot of money for hers.

I had never seen this tool before, I will have to give it a try! :D

I praise all you hand quilters...I don't do much hand sewing and even avoid it at all costs as I have arthritis and I just can't do it anymore but I appreciate the work of others and I did enjoy the video. Maybe in another life I'll have good joints and will be able to make use of the knowledge I gained this morning from this video. Thanks!

Sorry that there isn't an update from me but since I got my Aunt Becky, I learned to quilt without a hoop so maybe one day I'll learn to use it. Hey maybe that was an update....LOL!

I have seen the video and watched Jean Brown in person at several quilt shows, so I bought "Aunt Becky". I haven't been able to make it work for me. My needle slides off of it so fast, I can't control it. I use a spoon with about 2 inches of the handle cut off, in the same way that Jean Brown uses Aunt Becky. For some reason the spoon works for me, its great, it really saves my fingers.

It makes sense as long as I watch her do it. As soon as I get home, the DUH factor settles in and it's a no go!

I have an Aunt Becky too, but have never gotten past the feeling awkward stage. That's really my fault, not Aunt Becky's, because I have just never given it the time to feel natural.

Is the Aunt Becky tool just a piece of bent metal?
