Aurifil 50wt. for hand quilting? Guess not!
 

I decided to hand quilt my Easy Street using Bonnie Hunter's free-hand Baptist fans. Had a lovely pale green Aurifil 50wt. thread that would be perfect, colorwise, and I thought I'd read where people use it for hand quilting and everything. When I tried to knot the thread it was really hard to get a knot large enough to stay in the sandwich and then when I tugged on it, the thread broke. Luckily, this happened after just one fan. I guess the 50 wt just isn't strong enough for hand quilting. Anyone had luck using it for hand quilting? I'm off to the stores tomorrow looking for pale green hand quilting thread. Hope I find some, but I suppose white will do.

You might want to try a heavier thread. Aurifil makes a 28 wt.

Aurifil is called a 50 weight thread, but I think it really is more like a 60 weight. If you do a thread test with it, it breaks quite easily. I wouldn't use it for hand quilting, but have used it for machine work. Hope you can find a thread you like!

Thanks for your input, Ladies. In the interest of immediate gratification (I need a hand project like yesterday!) I'm going with whats available locally. Found a green Gutterman I thought was close but it seems a little dark. I may wind up using plain old Coats & Clark in white.
