I haven't tried Aurifil but plan to since I keep hearing such wonderful things about it. I did order Masterpiece about a year ago from Superior Threads and fell in love with it for many of the same reasons listed here for Aurifil. It just seems to last forever, my piecing (never perfect!) is improved, and it doesn't seem to have a lot of lint. It will be interesting to compare them.

I have not used it for FMQ and think I would prefer a heavier weight for FMQ so that it shows up better.

damaquilts 05-30-2012 04:25 AM

So all this Gutermann I have been buying at 50% off I need to stop.. lol I like having a wall full of all colors so have been buying it whenever Joann had it on sale. I did buy Bottom Line when I re-upped on The Quilt Show they had a coupon for a free spool.. I got Black and White and I love it . it seems to last forever. I am using up all my Coats and Clark because now that I have use the Gutermann , the C and C justs seems so linty . I have to stop and clean out my machine a lot. I am going to check out the Aurafil. The only thing is if I run out and am in the middle of a project I have to wait for the mail. :-)

[ÇI QUOTE=Scissor Queen;5250740]Extremely low lint, thin but strong, plus when you wind a bobbin you get a lot more thread on the bobbin so you don't have to change bobbins as often. And if you figure the cost per yard it's not any more expensive than some of the bargain brands.
I use it for all the same reasons. My Janome loves it

sguillot 05-30-2012 05:19 AM

I have a burning question, I read this board every day and see FMQ all the time and I just can't figure out what it stands for so will someone please tell me. Thanks so much.

patchsamkim 05-30-2012 05:20 AM

I love Aurifil thread...low lint when sewing, love how much thread I can wind onto a bobbin so don't have
to change bobbins as often, it is a thinner, but stronger thread, and when you figure out the yardage on a
spool, it really isn't more expensive.

gmcsewer 05-30-2012 05:29 AM

FMQ means Free Motion Quilting, where you put on your darning foot, hopping foot. put the pressure foot lever down) and move the fabric in whatever direction you wish.

ShirlinAZ 05-30-2012 05:49 AM

I almost always use Aurifil. It is the best "normal" weight thread I've ever used, and I've used a lot of thread. I often use King Tut quilting thread in the top and Aurifil in the bottom for fmq. I normally work with a neutral color, so when a specific color is required (top stitching) I use a C&C from a large stash that I am trying to use up. I'll be glad when the C&C is gone.

Someone asked about using embroidery thread. All the emb thread I have for my machine is rayon or poly. I tried it once for piecing, but it melted when I ironed the seam, Fortunately I saw it before I sandwiched the quilt so I was able to resew it. Lesson learned: Always use thread that will take the same heat as the fabric. I do use emb thread for decorative stitching on quilts.

Dix 05-30-2012 06:35 AM

Amen to what she said! I never use anything else. Also, for hand quilting I use YLI all the time!!!

I know that sounds snobbish, kinda picky, but my piecing has been so much more accurate since I started using aurifil. And I swear it's like the loaves and fishes story - I use it, leave the room, and there's more on the spool when I get back (okay, I know that's not true, but...) the larger spool just seems to never run out!

quiltnotes 05-30-2012 07:03 AM

Aurifil is my favorite brand of thread. If you hold a strand up to the light and compare it with others, you can see that it is lint free. I automatically clean my bobbin case after each bobbin runs out and I find very little lint. I have always bought mine from Red Rock.

Nanaquilts44 05-30-2012 07:22 AM

I love the Aurifil too. I have no problems with it and it sews up, presses and lasts beautifully.

capucine 05-30-2012 07:43 AM

Hello Love2Craft I found Aurifil on ebay link below I just finished a quilt and used Aurifil for the first time I must say I will be using the threads again.

As a note ... the link is for a 12 wt thread, so more for handwork, such as the Sashiko they have created the grouping for.

The Tristan link has all different weights of the threads. There's good info about shipping to other countries, including Australia!

I just love you guys!

Might I just add that this is one of the 1000 reasons why I love all you guys! I am just starting to quilt, well I have piddled and paddled in it before but I am really getting into it now. I have made a few baby blankets, mostly rag quilts, and crocheted some too but I am really getting into the whole quilting thing. And I have learned so much from you guys! I have learned so much more from you all then any books could do! I find myself doing whatever you guys say to do, and I am so addicted to this board! I check it all day long at work, and then when I get home too. I love all the pics and all the easier tricks that you all have up your sleeves, love it, love it, love it! My mama is kind of 'old school', don't get on the computer all that much, but she is a pretty good quilter, and I keep telling her what you guys do differently and I have taught her so many of you guys tricks and tips. And she's the quilter, not me! I just had to tell you all this cuz you guys rock!!! Now I gotta go find me some Aurifil thread...lol.

Snooze2978 05-30-2012 10:15 AM

I use Aurifil threads for quilting but I find it to be quite linty. I haven't tried out threads yet so maybe the other threads are more linty but I seem to be pulling out big wads of lint after every bobbin change. Am I doing something wrong to make it lint up for me or what?

Jim's Gem 05-30-2012 10:21 AM

I love this thread. My machine loves this thread. It does not lint up the machine. Great quality thread!!!!

pjnesler 05-30-2012 12:17 PM

With all the great comments, I've got to try it - SOON!

Keep in mind batting and fabrics also produce lint.

Exactly where I was going with this! :D

Snooze ... if you haven't tried other threads, then no you wouldn't notice the difference. There can be a LOT of lint coming from the batting and fabrics

Go to the Store fast fast fast!!!!!!
Or better still order a stash from Tristan ... you won't regret it.

lklos303 05-30-2012 02:28 PM

Aurifil thread. I don't use anything else for my piecing. And I also buy it from Discount Embroidery supply.com

I agree.
Think you can order it from Keepsake Quilting. They have a sale on now but I'm not sure if the thread is included.

I've read embroidery thread should not be used for regular sewing but it can be used for decorative stitches or quilting.

burchquilts 05-30-2012 10:01 PM

How is it for hand applique, I wonder? I have trouble with my thread knotting up when I'm doing hand work (applique or sewing the binding on). I usually use Gutterman or Metrosene (I think that's how you spell them).

Can you buy single spools or small collections at these places? I don't want (or need) 47325 spools to start with... LOL!

jitkaau 05-31-2012 03:56 AM

Long staple=less lint with strength.

I use it for hand work and have not had any problems. And yes, you can buy it one spool at a time thru Tristan ... though whenyou're paying shipping, most buy multiples to spread out the cost. For one spool, I'd just pay the higher price thru a LQS and try it out for hand work and in the machine.

gigi712 05-31-2012 04:43 AM

I've been wanting to try it since hearing about it from this wonderful board. Bought a big spool at Red Rock and couldn't wait to finish the spool of Mettler I had on my machine. Well, it happened yesterday! Filled many bobbins and finished my piecing on the current project. What a difference! I'm a convert!

I notice that there aren't many places that sell the big spools and I wonder why. I don't really need all the colors and I like the convenience of the big spools.

You can certainly use Aurifil 50wt* in applique.
However, Superior Threads' Bottom Line is the best thread for applique in my opinion. Completely disappears. It's a 60wt poly. I used to use it for handpiecing too, but have switched for that to Mettler 60wt cotton embroidery thread.

* the prices for most of the sources listed are about $9/spool; too expensive for me.
I always get mine from Tristan in Canada.
There are always quilters in my Guilds that want in on an Aurifil order, thus spreading the high shipping cost. It usually comes out that we're paying around $5/spool, including shipping

Snooze2978 05-31-2012 04:55 AM

Thanks for the input. I'm fairly new at this quilting bug so I have lots to learn. I just found out with my last quilt on the frame that squaring up your blocks before putting them together is essential. Though the top looked square, when it came down to quilting the borders............YIKES!!!! Were they off kilter. Had the dickens of a time quilting them using the robotic system. Thanks for everyone's input as we newbies need all the help we can get.

ctilburg 05-31-2012 05:15 AM

When you figure the price per yard on the large spools, Aurifil is actually cheaper than most quality threads.

Lady Diana 05-31-2012 06:26 AM

Check out this site for pricihng and yards per spool. I think you will find one you like...http://jhittlesewing.funoverload.com...new_items.html

It's on page 1, last post.

scrapykate 05-31-2012 06:41 AM

I love the 50wt but the 28wt doesn't like my machine or visaversa. So now I just use the 50wt for everything, piecing and quilting. Love the colors and way it sinks into the fabric.

patski 05-31-2012 07:33 AM

my machine loves it too! it leaves less lint, dosen't break and is about the same price if I buy it on ebay

janice1120 05-31-2012 11:03 AM

I have a Tin Lizzie, but have never tried it on that. Do you use the 50 wt?

I love Aurifil because it generates least amount, if any, lint and it's very strong.

fayzer 05-31-2012 04:47 PM

"WOW! I just looked at their site, and the regular 50wt is about 1/2 price to what I've seen it at in several LQS' here in Canada. hhmmm? wonder why? Not that I'm arguing!"

I made a post on FB about buying Aurifil threat from Tristan in Canada. A guy from Aurifil posted a comment and said Tristan was selling close out colors and threads that were being phased out. Who cares! The thread I got is awesome. I also gave some to my BFF and she loves it too!

BTW ... the shipping fees/methods are clearly explained in the link on their site. And they do ship to Internationally.
