Aussie coming to USA - Looking for patchwork shops
Hi, I am from Australia and we are flying to the USA next week.
I am looking for patchwork shops, fabric warehouses, addresses and how to find them in the following cities. Also is there any exhibitions on in these cities in the next few weeks. We will be travelling around for a while so any info would be fantastic. Also any websites for these shops would be handy. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Anaheim, San Diego, Salt Lake City, New York, Washington. If any of you can help me here it would be really great. I can print out the addresses so I can go straight to the shops. Time will be of the essence so I don't have to hunt around when I get to these cities. Thank you so much. Glenda (aussie down under) |

and Quilter's Haven in Bountiful, UT http://www.quiltershaven-ut.com/ San Diego- head out to Quilt in a Day in San Marcos http://www.quiltinaday.com/retail/sanmarcos-map.asp and Quilter's Paradise in Escondido http://www.quiltersparadiseesc.com/index.php Can probably do both of these same day. And in El Cajon(closer to San Diego) is Cozy Quilt http://www.cozyquilt.com/ |
Is Washington the City, or the state? If state which side will you be on?
|
My friend spends 3 months in San Diego each year and her favourite is http://rosiescalicocupboard.com/
|
Los Angeles (These 2 shops are about 30-45minutes away but well worth the trip)-The fabric patch in montclair (http://www.thefabricpatch.com/) and ginger's quilt shoppe in upland (http://www.gingersquiltshoppe.com/). These 2 shops are about 5minutes distance from each other. Gingers is closed mondays so if you want to see both on the same day choose a different day
Las Vegas-Fabric Boutique(http://www.fabricboutique.com/wp/) Very big beautiful shop with lots of choices, only been there twice but loved it. All three have very friendly helpful staff and a nice array of choices hope you get a chance to see all 3 |
Hi Glenda - in New York City there's only one quilt shop, The City Quilter on 25th Street, where the feeling of "I want everything" is likely to come over you. Streets in New York are mostly numbered so it's easy to get around. Avenues are numbered also (2nd, 3rd etc.) but there are a few with names. Any city map will help you. There are wonderful trimming shops on Avenue of the Americas (same as 6th Avenue) in the 30's and a lot of excellent fabric shops around 40th and 41st off 8th Avenue, mainly for apparel fabric but some quilting fabric available. Not knowing your preference, you might love all the unusual and exotic fabrics in that area. I used to have a website that would be helpful and will try and find it. Have a wonderful trip, enjoy EVERYTHING!!!
My grandson recently took a job in Australia and he absolutely loves living there. |
Found it - this should give you some excellent information. Happy shopping!

Thank you so much for this information ladies. I will look up these websites tomorrow. That gives me quite a bit of info and a starting point when I get to the United States. We are also going to Vancouver and Edmonton. If there are any patchwork shops there I would appreciate it too. Thanks heaps.
Also we are going to Washington City. |
Looks like everyone has hit my favorites in San Diego. Enjoy your trip! Are you bringing extra luggage or will you ship all the fabric you buy back to Australia?
If you are in San Diego on May 8th, that is when Sunshine Quilters guild meets and our speaker is Pat Speth with a workshop on Wednesday May 9th. You welcome to come and listen or there may be openings in the workshop I think. |
My favorite in the Los Angeles area is M & L Fabricks. Not so much a quilt shop but boy do they have the fabric! It's near Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. Address below.
3430 W Ball Rd Anaheim, CA 92804 And I could kick myself for missing Big City Quilts when I was in New York a couple of years ago. Don't you miss it. Will you be bringing extra luggage or shipping a big box home? |
Here is for Las Vegas and no you don't have to do the tour , just easier to get all the info from this site

If you will be in Vancouver proper... you might want to check out www.theclothshop.com they have just moved recently. A shop I enjoy and it's not far from the airport is www.quiltedbear.net and if you come a little further east you will find www.wineberryfabrics.com or www.fabricana.com or www.agreatnotion.com and a little shop only a short ferry ride away www.carola.ca

If you go to Las Vegas Lokk up Quilt tours of Las Vegas. There is a gal ther who takes you on a 3-5 store shop hop, picks you up at your hotel and drops you back off and provides you with a mailing package (you pay postage) to get your haul back home unless you have an extremely large suitcase. Enjoy your trip!!!!!
|
I was going to list M & L Fabrics also. If you are going to Disneyland, Anaheim, it is not far from there. Plan a couple hours there if you can. It is a wonderful store and has tons of fabric at great prices. I am going there in the morning actually. The first time I went my eyes about popped out of my head. LOL Hope you have a great time while you are here.

Bear's Quilt Shop
10722A Trask Ave (Corner of Taft St) Garden Grove, CA 92843 (Garden Grove is close to Anaheim) (714) 590-9209 Email: [email protected] http://www.bearsquiltshop.com Full on-line quilt shop, and brick and mortar store. Batiks, Hand Dyes, Extra Wide Fabrics, Reproductions, Steam A Seam 2, Long Arm Quilting, Classes, and Quality Quilt Fabrics. Black Cat Quilts 2608 Ocean Ave San Francisco, CA 94132 (415) 337-1355 A nice selection of batiks, Hoffmans, etc. Miss Kitty is the resident black cat. Friendly and helpful staff that really enjoys visitors. M & L Fabrics 3430 W. Ball Rd Anaheim, CA (714) 995-3178 This isn't a quilt shop, just a fabulous store with fabric at cut-rate prices for flat fold ($1.98 a yard and the selection will boggle your mind - printed fabrics, solid fabrics, and flannels galore),and acres of fabric on the bolt that runs from $2.98 to $12.99/yd (generally bolted fabric is about $2 less a yard than you would find it in the quilt shops or fabric stores). And they have every panel made, all on display on the walls around the entire shop. And their cutting is generous, none of that have to be within a millimeter of the yardage you request. Timeless Quilts 1155 E. Lincoln Ave. Anaheim, CA 92805 (714) 520-5304 Timeless Quilts is a very unique Quilt Shop located in a beautifully restored and renovated, "craftsman" home, built in 1920. The home has warmth and charm, a perfect setting for quilting! I believe it is still open but I will call to be sure. |
Oooops, correction, M&L Fabric on flat fold is now $2.98/yd, not $1.98. Used to be $1.59. Just can't keep up with inflation!

In Washington, DC try G Street Fabrics.
|
If you have time & a car, Lancaster, PA is about 2 1/2 hours north of Washington, DC and quilter's heaven. Lots of quilt shops with great prices and beautiful countryside. I live in the Washington DC area but do most of my fabric shopping in Lancaster. Here's a couple of info links http://www.quiltart.com/lancaster.html, http://www.padutchcountry.com/shoppi...ter-quilts.asp, and http://www.authenticbandb.com/quilters.htm.

G Street Fabrics outside of Washington DC.
Great huge shop - sells all kinds of fabric, incl. quilting. http://www.gstreetfabrics.com I just checked their site for the web name and they have a coupon click if you're interested |
Here's a cool one for Edmonton http://www.earthlygoodsquilting.com/
|
San Francisco Area: There are no quilt shops in SF proper anymore that I know about, but there are several within 25-50 miles driving distance: New Pieces in Berkeley (across the bay from SF) and down the SF peninsula: Always Quilting in San Mateo, Eddie's and also The Granary in Sunnyvale (near San Jose), Prairie Queen in San Jose. You can probably google for more. There is a fabric shop in SF called Britex (on Post St) that has all sorts of wonderful fabrics (mostly for clothing, but it's still fun to visit).
If you have a US compatible cell phone, there is a quilt shop app available. In Las Vegas, there are several: Quiltique in Henderson (just south of Las Vegas), Christmas Goose, and Fabric Boutique. There is a quilt tour company, where she'll come and take you on a tour. Here's the website: http://www.quilttoursoflasvegas.com/. I was going to try it once, but I moved to LV a little over a year ago, so I have gone to all of them by myself. And 2 hours north of Las Vegas is St. George, Utah. They have about 8 quilt shops, one of which is in a hardware store (carries all the name brands). My favorite is called Scrap Apple Quilts. They carry a lot of batiks. If you're going to Seattle, there is one in Pike Place Market. I forget the name, but it's very nice. |
I see someone already recommended "The City Quilter" in New York City. I was just there in November and it was an awesome shop! They had a quilt gallery in one room with quilts on display (I think most were for sale). Plan on stopping if at all possible. They are very friendly and helpful.

My first thought was also M&L fabrics, on the corner of Knott & Ball as mentioned in reply above me. I also agree with Rosie's iCalico Cupboard and Ginger's in Claremont, which I prefer over Fabric Patch ... but you will enjoy the adventure with ALL of them.
Be sure to report back and let us know which you really enjoyed. My all-time fave is M&L fabrics, and have to keep myself away so that I am not tempted to buy too much ... their prices are great! |
Welcome!
Check fabric outlet 2109 mission, near Bart station, discount fabrics 525 4th street, near sf Caltrain station. Across bay bridge see new pieces, Berkeley, cotton patch, Lafayette, and stone mountain and daughter, Berkeley. If you do go to Berkeley also check out the many sari shops on university ave - not much quilting fabric but stunning silks and slinkies. We have many great quilt guilds here and top instructors, so I hope you can spend at least a week. I loved my trips to Australia, and you have superb quilters there. The launceston quilt show got me interested in this addictive hobby! Have a great trip, Fran |

Britex too!!! I had to swear off it when I worked in the city - I filled my closet with their fabric and didn't have time to sew with my long commute.
Fran again |

3430 W Ball Rd Anaheim, CA 92804 Definitely M and L Fabrics - I took another QB member there who was visiting from NZ and she had to buy a duffle bag to get all the fabric back to NZ as the selection and prices were amazing! Enjoy your visit! And I could kick myself for missing Big City Quilts when I was in New York a couple of years ago. Don't you miss it. Will you be bringing extra luggage or shipping a big box home? |
In Las Vegas you might enjoy Quiltique or Christmas Goose. Also, if you have time to drive to St.George Utah they have a wonderful quilt store
