Awful mistake--almost

I have to share this with you. I had just put a king-sized quilt in my longarm--120 inches--and was fiddling with the batting because the size is going to be very close. I stepped back to take another look and realized that I had set a block in wrong way around--right in the middle of the quilt. I've been looking at this quilt for weeks and am still puzzled at how I could have done this and how it got past me. But it did. I had to unpin one end, unstitch the block and then handstitch it back into the quilt. Fortunately, it turned out fine and you would never know. I'm just so relieved that I saw it before I got the quilt half quilted.

valleyquiltermo 04-21-2013 03:25 PM

I hate when that happens. 0;-(

QuiltnMyra 04-21-2013 03:26 PM

Great save Jan, can imagine the relief!

Tartan 04-21-2013 03:28 PM

Whoa, that was too close for comfort!

QuiltnNan 04-21-2013 03:31 PM

that is very fortunate that you spotted it before quilting

nativetexan 04-21-2013 03:35 PM

my husband found one for me!!!

Nammie to 7 04-21-2013 05:02 PM

Isn't it amazing how a person can look at something so many times and not see a problem. It was meant to be found even though it created a few issues for you.

auntpiggylpn 04-21-2013 05:08 PM

It happens more than we like it to! I have found that if I take a picture of my quilt top when I am finished with it, I am able to spot any wayward blocks. I download the picture to my computer so I can view it on a larger screen. Saved my butt more than once!!!

DebraK 04-21-2013 05:10 PM

pictures are priceless!

bigredharley 04-21-2013 05:17 PM

Yup, happened to me too!

OHSue 04-21-2013 05:31 PM

I am always amazed at the things that seem to slip by me, and then stick out like a sore thumb. I am always doing that sort of thing.

Dina 04-21-2013 07:07 PM

Wow, that was close. Glad you caught it!

Dina

Lori S 04-21-2013 07:14 PM

Glad you caught it . I realized on one quilt after it came back from the Long Arm pro , I had one block in the wrong way. I like the suggestion posted earlier to take a photo. If I had I would have caught it.

I use this method too when trying to decide on what colors to use. For some reason, looking at them on a screen seems to help me. Glad you noticed it in time on your quilt.

DOTTYMO 04-21-2013 10:48 PM

Someone I know did this but also quilted. The quilt is called," the drunken quilt"

yep, works for me to that way!!!
and by my answer you can tell it happened to me to:D

Wow, you got lucky. I made the mystery quilt my guild was going to have in our annual show. About 35-40 members made this mystery quilt and they all looked different and all were beautiful. At the end of the show, I was sitting with my sisters waiting for the doors to close so I could take down my quilts. All of a sudden, I am looking at my mystery quilt and notice that the last border on one side is sewed on upsides down. Once I pointed this out to my sister, they told me no one would every notice this as these quilts were very colorful. Now, myself and many other quilters in the guild looked at my quilt when I finished it, my long arm quilter never notice this either. It took a tired me looking at my quilt from a distance to see this. Glad it wasn't at the beginning of the show that I saw this, I would of made some excuse to try to take it down. NormaBeth:(

OzarksGma 04-22-2013 02:13 PM

I got a block in sideways and the longarmer I had taken it to caught it and called me and asked if I wanted to correct it before she quilted it, I made a mad dash quickly and picked it up, fixed it and took it back to her the next day so I would n't lose my place in line. So glad she called and didn't just go ahead and quilt it.

hperttula123 04-22-2013 02:49 PM

glad you caught it. I always get so excited to quilt that I don't pay attention and just quilt away...lol. I usually find them after I'm done and take a picture of it and notice it in the picture.

twinkie 04-23-2013 03:04 AM

I think that has happened to all of us from time to time.

Even just standing back and looking at the quilt through my phone camera helps spot color choice mistakes as well as placement foibles since loading pics onto the computer is still a challenge for me. On this I take the easy way out!

klgls 04-23-2013 03:55 AM

I did a whole row upside down and didn't realize until I had it half quilted. Thankfully no one has noticed it but me. But everytime I look at it, it jumps right out at me!

quilttiger 04-23-2013 04:11 AM

It happened to me once, with a pieced border. Since then, I now stand back from the design wall, take pictures or do both.

quilterpurpledog 04-23-2013 04:39 AM

Good save! It was great to be able to fix it before you quilted it. Some people call those difficulties a design element. I like the idea of pictures to point out those errors. I also like to lay the whole project down on the floor to see the whole perspective. I also like to use scraps of paper pinned on squares and borders to help me stay on target.

Just had a similar happening , one corner of a block was turned the wrong way, at least my husband caught it for me.

maviskw 04-23-2013 05:22 AM

Last week, I changed out a block. I had made one block with quite bright lime green, and thought that was to bright for the quilt, so I made another one. The green block was laying around the house for at least a month when I told my husband why it wasn't in the quilt. He said he really liked it. Then I took the orphan block to club show-and-tell, and they said they liked it also. By that time, I had also fallen in love with the block. The next day, it took me about 5 minutes to rip out a different block and another 10 minutes to put the green one in.
At that time, the quilt was sandwiched and glued, but the glue came apart easily enough on one corner.

I had a quilt on my bed for 2 YEARS before I noticed that one block was tilted the wrong way. It had been in 3 quilt shows before that. I'm not telling anyone if you won't. My granddaughter has it now.

Louise Houghtaling 04-23-2013 05:50 AM

The very bright "Winning Hand" quilt I made last year has one block askew. I call it my Amish quilt.

yweinst 04-23-2013 05:54 AM

That is definitely lucky.

cpcarolyn 04-23-2013 06:15 AM

Been there done that.

That never even occurred to me!! Great idea and nice save!

I have the collection of "Greatest Quilts of 19__". The photo of one quilt is gorgeous, but right in the middle of the photograph is a block turned the wrong way.

peppermint31 04-23-2013 07:29 AM

happened to me too! I had the top on a display board for about a week when I noticed one block turned:(. I agree that taking a picture works really well to find errors
Patricia

roserips 04-23-2013 07:35 AM

I think that happens more often than you think to all of us.

MargeD 04-23-2013 07:49 AM

I'm sure you're thrilled that you caught it in time, but of course it had to be in the middle of the quilt - Murphy's Law. Been there, done that, and sometimes I don't catch it. I'm happy for you that you found it. Can we get to see a picture of the finished quilt? Looking forward to it.

I agree. It was good you found it before quilting.

sulyle 04-23-2013 08:29 AM

Good save. I try to take a digital pic when the top is done before quilting. It makes it easier to see mistakes. Isn't it odd that we can work on a quilt for weeks and never see those little oops until we step back?

LindaR 04-23-2013 09:24 AM

we had a guild auction quilt we had made and when they held it up I saw the block and said WOW...can't you guys see that...it was almost at the quilters too...

Scakes 04-23-2013 02:35 PM

I almost always take photos of the quilt top. Seems like it is easier to see mistakes.

mindless 04-23-2013 04:23 PM

aaargh! been there too! my oops was a memory quilt. pics of the recipients family....well all but one anyway. it was pointed out to me after it was quilted....after I gave it to her. but I got lucky. the alien pic was in a corner....fairly easy (ha!) to remove, replace, & requilt. Now I double check first. (almost always )

frenchfryqueen 04-24-2013 10:31 AM

My quilting is of course perfect, but still my hubby always proofs my work as I go. I get so mad at him for finding mistakes those little elves make! lol! If only.
