Baby to Bigger Quilts
 

Baby quilts typically range in size from about 30 inches by 40 inches for smaller cuddle quilts to around 38 inches by 48 inches for crib quilts. Larger quilts, around 50 inches square or bigger, can also be made to accommodate toddlers as they grow.

A lap quilt typically measures between 36 x 48 inches and 50 x 60 inches, but sizes can vary based on personal preference. Some quilters prefer larger lap quilts, which can range from 52 to 78 inches.

Most of my smaller quilts are 48x60. I personally prefer a larger size for these as they are able to be used for a longer period of time.

Now to the fun question………What are your favorite baby quilts that you have made for a lap (or larger) for yourself or a baby.

I can see both the flower and the turtle. I think I will be keeping this pattern for a very long time. I have had the pleasure of seeing a real sea turtle at Sea World many years ago and still love them today.

Charming Diamonds
 

I am in the process of making the free quilt pattern: Charming Diamonds by Hailey Young found at www.haileystitches.com
It is a Throw size 68 x 68 Charm pack Quilt.
So many options for the top and bottom sections of the quilt; Use a solid to applique or embroider a design. Also fun area to show off quilting designs.
Use a Print from one of the charm square fabrics. I love the simplicity of this pattern!

For baby quilts I like 45 by 60 or so. It’s a bit big for a baby but they can use it up through about school age with no problems. My go to pattern is the Quilt in a Day Quick Trip on YouTube. it’s very easy to put together but looks good.

For adults, I like twin size. I’m 6’1” tall and 60” is just enough to make me mad.

I usually make one of those 3 yard quilts with fun fabrics for baby quilts. They are. Pretty decent size for longer term use. Especially since they don't go in cribs anymore

I seldom make any quilt smaller than width of fabric square but I prefer 48 X 60 for a baby quilt. They grow so fast and if we put our love and skills to work into a quilt, let's let those kiddos have years of use from our effort.

The question is often asked about what pattern to use for a baby quilt and my response is always "what ever pattern you want". It is the fabric that says baby, child or theme. Since I make my quilts with the intention that they will be used for years, I choose not to make they too "baby" but more juvenile or fabric that is interesting to look at and that is soothing. My choice, my way, your choice, your way is always the guideline that works best.
