Baby doll quilt size
 

I'm working on a quilt for a friend that is having a baby girl. I have several HST leftover and I thought it would be nice to make a little baby doll quilt. What size should it be? I definitely have enough fabric to make any size I just don't know what size to make it. I would like to be able to fit a baby doll that a toddler might have or maybe a little bigger?

One thing to be aware of when you make a doll quilt is that you want to use very fine thread for the quilting if you are machine quilting, and you probably want to keep the machine quilting relatively sparse. The first doll quilt I made, I machine-quilted in a small pattern with regular thread; it came out so stiff I could use it as a pot holder! If you can hand quilt, that is actually better for doll quilts as it keeps the drape soft.

I will keep that in mind, Prism. It definitely won't have too much quilting. The quilt for the baby is big so the doll one needs to be quick and easy!

I'm new to quilting and wondered about what thread to use. You mentioned fine thread--Do you mean machine embroidery thread? Would all purpose thread would not be good for a wall hanging doll quilt?

For the doll quilt size gonout and pick up a baby doll for the baby and make a blanket to fit the doll. I usually go with fq size or a bit larger. It just depends on the doll.

I've made a doll quilt for a stuffed animal, and even seen them made for Beenie Babies. For a doll just measure an average size doll in a store. Or take a pillowcase with you, drape it over the doll and pin it back to the size you prefer and measure when you get home. Works for me!

We learned in Guild that doll quilts can be any size, as dolls are any size. We always make between 150 and 200 doll quilts to give to the Salvation Army to give to the little girls for their dolls. It has been a very popular project, and very well received in the community. Mariah

I have a great niece that I made a doll quilt for Christmas. I made her little sister a quilt for Christmas and I didn't want big sis to be left out. I agree with Mariah that the size depends on the. doll... or in my case it was for her monkey. The one I made ended up 30" x 30" .. or so. .... actually I ordered 1 yard of some adorable minky from Fabric.com... they emailed me saying that they only had 1/2 yard pieces left... I told them that I didn't want those.... BUT when I got the order they had sent me one of the 1/2 yard pieces free of charge. (LOVE IT!!) So that is what I used. It was 60" wide and I cut it in half and pieced those halves together. The backing, binding and batting were all from my scrap/stash pile. That little girl loves that little quilt I am so glad that I made it and it didn't cost me a dime
