Baby (girl) pattern?
 

Does anyone have suggestions for a baby girl quilt in pink and grey?
It needs to be inexpensive and all I can think of is a flannel rag quilt.
I'd like something soft but have heard minky is very messy.

I've not used minky, but I love using fleece. It works great as combination backing/batting for a quick quilt. And you can just do minimal quilting too.

I ditto what Mom-6 said. How about a simple double 4 patch in your two colors with a fleece backing? If you do use fleece for the backing? I would suggest applying your binding on the BACK and pulling it around to the front. You can either hand stitch or machine stitch. If you take it to the back and were hand stitching , you would have to stitch in the fleece. Doable, but more work ..just a thought!

It is advised that very young children not have rag quilts. They will suck on the fringe and sometimes fall asleep on the fringe ... and that could either cause aspiration of the left over threads in the fringe or smother them.

Flannel does a great job. Personally, I love pinwheels in vibrant colors.

Fleece with just one layer serged at the edge also is nice and quick. It's just not as pretty [to me.]

I've been using a brushed cotton as flannel was boring for anyone.

I just finished a square dance baby quilt. I got the pattern from Bits n Pieces. You only need 6 or 8 fatquarters and it sewed up really quickly. I used pinks and greens so you could swap the green for gray. I have also made rag quilts from flannel for babies and they are cute too. Good luck whatever you do.

only the cut edge of the minky is messy---once you stitch it- either in blocks or as a backing it is fine...i love minky for kids/baby quilts- it is so wonderfully soft & cuddly. i usually take it out of the package (bag or box it comes home in) and step outside to give it a good shake- then i take it in & use it...if i'm going to be cutting it (using it for blocks instead of a back) i keep a lint roller handy & just clean up as i go...not so bad.
