I will be a great-grandma this summer. The mom-to-be has chosen the fabric collection shown in the link above. The designs are smallish & very cute :) , so the block pattern needs to be of a size that allows the designs to be seen. There are some really pretty pastel hand dye watercolor prints out there that could work. The ones I'm thinking of have 2-3 colors that are very pale. They add a little interest and still keep it light enough to show off the prints. Take a peek at some of the Hoffman 1895 collection. There are pretty greens, yellows, blues, lavenders. You may have to scroll a little, there are 340 colors.

Hand-dyed fabrics are beautiful, but I would not use in a baby quilt that will get many washings, due to propensity for dye bleeding. This shows a bright yellow Kona cotton with this fabric line. Would you consider using that? It is gender neutral, and really looks nice against all of the fabrics listed. I'm not keen on using white in the block, would a light color work? Thanks :!: |

Don't be afraid to use pastels! I use the Shout Color Catchers when I pre-wash fabric and when the quilts are done. I have not had any bleeding and I use a wide range of colors. The French Braid I posted earlier is shades of pastel yellow to cranberry. Just washed it this morning and it came out great. I also am working on one with white/black/orange/red/yellow for my son. I washed all the fabric together with the Color Catcher and not a single problem!

Those fabrics would make a cute Stacked Coins quilt.

Blue, pink, yellow, peach, or a soft green are possibilities. The pinwheel quilt is adorable too, and you could definitely change the background as long as there's enough contrast between it and the prints. |
You can use any of the background fabrics from your feature fabric in the solid triangles. Love that pinwheel pattern.

Thanking all of you for the helpful suggestions. So now I'm thinking strongly of subbing light blue (the baby is a boy), beige, & yellow as the solids--it'll end up a controlled scrappy, (I think). Now to order the fabric--la, la, la!
