I have a quick question. If I were to make a baby quilt using a trip around the world setting, how many pieces would I have to use? I'm going to buy the pieces online and wanted to know how many would it take?

It depends on the finished size you want to make.
Otherwise can't give an answer.

Calculate this way.

If you want the quilt to be 36"x45" and the block size 3" then it will take 12 rows across and 15 rows down.

12x15=180 3 1/2 squares. 3" is the finished size.

However, do do Trip Around the World you should graft it out on paper as it will require a certain number of rows to make the design even. It might take 13 rows across etc to have a center and even number of rows on each side.

Now. A Trip Around the World requires distinct colors of fabric to achive the look so you need to graft out in order to determine how many pieces of each color/value/pattern you will need. That is the reason for grafting it out on paper first.

According to Eleanor Burns Quick Trip Quilts:

Crib size 42 x 52

1/4 yard of 6 different fabrics for body of quilt
1/4 yard for first border
3/4 for second border
5/8 yard for binding
2 3/4 yard for backing

I made one recently, would be about 36" x 44" without the end borders. I used 4" finished size squares, and it took 99 squares, in 7 different colors (but I used scraps so it was more than 7 different fabris). I made a tutorial and put it here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-45544-1.htm

I suggest graphing it out, too.
