I think baby quilts will always be in fashion.
|
In my family, quilts and blankets were used either on the floor, when in the car seat or when in the stroller.

Is being in fashion still in fashion?

DGD who is a RN recently taught a class for new mothers about crib safety for newborns - infant babies are swaddled in sleep sacks instead of covered with blankets or quilts. She's expecting her first child in a few months so instead of a quilt I sent her a pack of 4 swaddle blankets. I'll make a small quilt that can be used in the car, stroller or when someone holds the baby and later on when baby is older a bigger quilt - just like I did for his 4 cousins. Will do the same for another DGD who is expecting in June. That will make 6 great grands for us, all boys so far but will have to wait to see what #6 is - hoping to finally make a girly quilt for one of our great grandkids.

I once sent a quilt to hubby's nephew, who asked how to use it. I suggested, as many of you have, that it's a great floor quilt, or else, they are nice to hang on the wall until baby is old enough to have it on his bed.

Yes, what are these called? I would love to find a pattern. Lately I saw a mom spread one of those on a high chair in a restaurant.

I did make two of these car seat covers which are very popular and expensive. The first one is made out of two layers of flannel. I measured the car seat and used those measurements. I also made one for a gift and used the self binding pattern for baby blankets as the cover and attached the handles.
When it got colder, I purchased two warm baby blankets, applique on the front, sewed together and added handles after lining up with car seat. Purchasing the blankets was cheaper than buying the fabric. |
I put a note in with baby quilt gifts basically saying too heavy for a new baby cover but great on the floor for tummy time & great for snuggling when a toddler. I make colorful I Spy quilts, one Mom told me that when she put baby on floor for tummy time he loved being on my quilt but would cry on other blankets-he liked looking at the objects/faces

Several of the babies I made quilts for carried them everywhere as toddlers. I got one back to repair the appliques that were coming loose when he was 7. That kind of love just warms my heart!

As others have stated baby quilts will never go out of fashion. There are many uses for them and they are versatile. Personally, I would rather get a handmade quilt for a baby than a store bought one but that's just me.
