When my son was smaller, I liked a small backpack for a diaper bag. I was given a very nice diaper bag but barely used it because it was so bulky. I know several others who also liked backpacks. So you might try feeling out the prospective mother or grandma about that first and see if she would get much use out of one. I do like the one that Mama Bear linked too, though. It doesn't look so much like a diaper bag.
Now that my son is older, I carry a small pack of wipes and a couple of extra diapers in my purse. My purse is pretty big, though. |
thanks for all the hints.....I do have some awesome baby boy fabric....yes, she is having a little boy!, so I know there will be a quilt in his future. Might hold off on the diaper bag until I get an idea from Grandma!

Nice pattern, Lori! Thanks for sharing that one.

The Professional Tote makes a nice diaper bag. It has pockets on the inside, front and back, and on the sides. It looks complicated to make but if you take one line at a time it is easy to do.

When my kids were little I had a huge diaper bag for keeping in the van and a small tote bag for taking a couple diapers, travel pack of wipes, change of clothes in with me wherever I was going. I made lots of these smaller ones as shower gifts. They were always used and liked. I always had a pocket on the front that I put the baby's name on. Denim was a very popular fabric for the body of the tote. Then the lining and the pocket were some sort of fun fabric.

I just made 2 of these, 1 for me for traveling and the other for my DIL to use as a diaper bag ...there are alot of steps but nothing too hard and they sure do turn out nice. I had my fabric pre quilted at the local LA shop ( a tight meandor) first and it gave the bag alot more body and structure !

I made a bag in class to learn how to make bags. It was a big bag with pockets on the sides. My friend at work found out she was having twins so it worked out well for her. I put some things in it for her like "Butt paste," wipes, and diapers. She had an older son who was a toddler so she put some of his toys in it as well. My daughter in law liked a small bag my sister made for her for diapers. Both worked well with their own preferences

I have made several diaper bags for others. I found a pattern on all free sewing that works well. I put pockets on the outside and the inside. A zipper on the top and handles that can go around the shouldar or the neck to make it easier to handle with baby in tow. http://www.allfreesewing.com/Sewing-...g-pattern/ct/1 Here is the basic pattern that I started with and I vary it according to the needs of the mother to be.

The first diaper bag I made was with a pattern I purchased on youcanmakethis.com and I have made many, many more since then, but it helped me get started and I can do it in my sleep now!

My friend made this one. It has 11 pockets. She made it 1 inch wider and 2 inches deeper and it was so cool. The mama loved it.

Here is a pattern for a diaper clutch pattern which my daughter just loved for those quick trips and having it with them wherever they go ... so make the bigger bag and get enough fabric to make a matching diaper clutch... I made one for my son in law (who was in the Army) out of camoflage fabric for their little man !!

I made my daughter a larger diaper bag which she uses all the time. I used home dec fabric on the outside for the extra durability. I have made several smaller bags which have been well received. These hold a bottle, diaper and just a few other things. I used McCall's pattern M5829 (view F). Not sure if this is still a current pattern. I used Insulbrite (the kind of batting you use for potholders) as batting and PUL fabric as the lining to make it waterproof and washable. PUL is the fabric used on diaper covers that you make and is available in most fabric shops. Congratulations on the new baby!
