Lately I've been playing some older Zelda games. And the way my train of thought goes I get to thinking of one thing which leads to about 500 other things and so now I'm here typing up this new subject.
Remember like half a year ago I came up with that idea to make a wall hanging the map from Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker? Well, I got to thinking about that and how to tackle it when I get around to it. If I want the map to scale I'd either have to make the islands super small and impossible to sew or make the wall hanging exceedingly huge and might as well be a regular quilt. I think I came up with an idea to solve the problem: fabric printing. Could print the islands on 6" blocks so then it could be to scale. But I'm not sure how well this would work because I've never printed on fabric before. The other thing I'm worried about is it having a "fake" look to it. And even if I went and quilted the islands I'm not sure how I would quilt the whole thing together (I didn't get to thinking that far when I first came up with this idea). I thought about quilting in the currents of the sea and then I remembered: there were no sea or wind currents in the game and I'm not about to make any up. Got any ideas? |
No ideas whatsoever. I was not blessed with much creativity.
I do want to say though that I think this is an excellent idea and I do hope that you'll be able to figure out what you need to do to get this done! |
Keep talking it through--it'll come to you. What's on your mind about it now? Hmmmm?
I'm afraid I'm only helpful in the "You can do it!" category--your thoughts go beyond mine. |
My advice would be not to worry about scale. The whole thing is make believe so just make it in such a way that is pleasing to you. It is an art quilt and as such there is nothing in any rule book in existence that says it has to be accurate. If it looks good to you, and you enjoy it, thats what matters. I for one missed the train that handed out creativity but have lots of opinions

What a cool idea! I'd have to say that's my favorite Zelda game. I know there is some un-chartered territory in that game, but maybe you could quilt it from the path your boat has to make to get from island to island.
Isn't there also some nasty stuff that attacks you in the water? I'm thinking of a water spout or something like that. Maybe you could quilt in those little details too. Just a thought. |
OK- Go to about.com/od/fabricdyeing/Fabric_PrintingandDyeing_Techniques.htm
This site is GREAT. Janet Wickell is the quilt goddess. if I didn't look up the right thing for you, just go to the about.com web site type in quilting. You can be on this site forever, an answer for any question-an addicting resource guide. Let me know how it goes. Fellow Wisconsin-ite (Hartford) |
I'd like to see the picture you want to quilt!!!!
|
If you are going to put the islands on individual blocks, you might try some trapunto (sp) to add some dimension to them.

Well, the thing with the island to island thing is that there's a certain point in the game where you can freely sail around...trying to map that out might get a little crazy. Unless you're talking about just doing the islands you HAVE to go to (not going to the extra islands, just the ones you need to go to in order to progress)....it might work, but I'd have to play through the entire game again to figure out the sailing routes...and I don't have the game (I used to, don't know what happened to it). There's like 5 or 7 different maps telling you the locations of things like submarines, Big Octos (aka. giant squids), etc. In the stratdegy guide, they put all this onto a single map, which is great for reference, but too me it looks to busy to be made into an art quilt. |

The Great Sea is HUGE and has 49 different islands and none of them are remotely close to each other....you probably spent about 1/3 of the game in a little sail boat getting from one island to the next. I just think to accurately depict that it has to be to scale (an island will fill up about 1/25 of a block :? ). |

I'm afraid I'm only helpful in the "You can do it!" category--your thoughts go beyond mine. Its also telling me I need a good pattern for the compass...like a marine star or something like that. Gonna need something that isn't going to drive me absolutely insane but still achieve what I'm looking for. Oh, here's the original post of the idea...http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/15/914.page There's a picture of what I had in mind...looks like crap but it works. |
I know for sure your going to want this program. Go to
http://www.cosman.nl/software_en.html it's free and it will help you do what you want. It's called the Quilt assistant. Let me know. At least look at the first two pages of the manual-see if I'm on the same track here. If that link doesn't send you there let me know |
"V" You are so creative!!! I can't wait to see what you come up with for your final design. Its is a lot like watching one of those "to be continued" shows. Its so fascinating to watch creative minds at work--mine isn't--I just copy commercially prepared patterns!

Ooh this quilt is going to be so cool!
Do you have a map already? I looked at your first thread about this quilt and saw that you put up a map. Is that the one you're going to use? I know you want it to be the from the game. I don't know if this in the game, or just fan art, but I thought maybe it would be helpful. http://www.nintendoclub.it/download/ww.JPG |
Billy Tee:
Have you used this program?? Just wondering- if it is too complicated I probably wouldn't use it, but would like to do quilted wall hamgings of grandchildren's faces if it would work for that. |

It is not difficult at all. Especially if your a good quilter, I promise. Download it and print the maual out right away. As you start up, go step by step with the manual on your lap. You'll get it the idea, you just have to play around a bit :D
|
at the bottom of the program website it has updated versions for your computer. I have to run and pick up my 5 yr old, I'll be back in 10. If you have problems I can walk you through it.

I made this from a pattern I bought. My first attempt at paper piecing. It was a challenge at first but I got the hang of it. This is for my older sister who loves turtles. Can't wait to give it to her.

I forgot to attach the whole view.

Changed the design a bit. Well, not a whole lot...got rid of the compass and added a border around the map part. I like this better...the compass created a lot of room on the right side, which is where they put an image of the controller to tell you what buttons to what when you bring up the map and how many sub-maps you have...crap that I don't want on this map, but when I got rid of it had a huge amount of space to fill in. Trying to look for some sort of border to add in the corners of the quilt. Possibly Celtic knotwork...haven't found anything I like yet. Still don't know how big my islands are going to be or how I'm going to add them in. I think applique is out of the question...I think if I do a decent sized wall hanging they might end up being too small to do so. And I just suck at applique...I've tried and I'm just not getting the hang of it. The only way I have thought of to get the islands onto the fabric is to screen print or print them onto fabric with a computer printer...and I don't know how to do either. Well, I kind of know how to screen print, but getting the design onto the screen is the part I don't know how to do. As far as size goes, 1/24 of the block might not work at all...have to test it out, but maybe something like 1/12 or something smaller than to scale, but still indicating "big sea, small islands". I think I want a different font for "The Great Sea". Might add island names depending on how it looks. |
Could you fuse the islands on and then zig-zag the edges?
|
Even if you just straight stitch at the edges after fusing, lots less complicated than trying applique. Wonder Under or anything like that is not terribly expensive and you just use bits of it--the size say of your islands or the samlll pieces you would want on the map. I wouldn't beginn to know how to print on fabric. I am doing good just to answer messages on the board. Thats about as complicated as I can get with a computer!
|
At this point I'm not sure if applique would even be a possibility. Because of the even sized borders the actual map had to get smaller...I think. For the moment the finished blocks for the map are 6", the map border is 1.5" wide, and the outer border is 6". The space the islands have to fit in is 2", which is bigger than actually putting it to scale, but still is pretty small to applique. I really can't go any bigger for my block size because the quilt is already like 57x57...in that respect I can't go any smaller to make the quilt smaller or my islands will be too small even with the new sizing.
|
Maybe you could embroider the islands. Satin stitch?
Or paint them with fabric paint? |
Besides cross stitching, I'm no good with embroidery. And I don't have one of those fancy machines that would do it for me...I can imagine it would be a pain trying to program the machine to do 49 different island designs.
Fabric paint? Its not a bad idea, but I don't think I'd like the effect the paint for this quilt. It would...I can't think of the word...where the design is raised. Anyways, the islands wouldn't be flat and I want more of a map-like feel to it. And in my experiance with fabric paint, when doing large areas, I can never get the paint to go evenly. I'm really liking the screen printing/silk screening idea. I kind of remember how to do it...basically just a wooden frame with a fine mesh on it and you place it on the fabric, put the ink on one side of the mesh, and swipe it through with a sqee-gee type thing. But I don't remember exactly how the design was transfered onto the mesh. There's the "traditional" way of doing it where you put a stencil of your design over the fabric, but there's a way you can get the design transfered directly onto the mesh. I can remember bits and pieces of it. The design was transfered onto those plastic sheets they use for overhead presentations, put onto the mesh, and some sort of stuff was put onto the mesh (I just remember it being neon green) and I think a light was shined through...something like that...but the stuff that was applied mesh would stick to the mesh and when you washed it off it wouldn't come off except where your design was. I've been trying to find a website that would show me how to do that, but I've only found one...and its video demenstrations...never will be able to see them with my internet connection so I don't even know if its what I'm looking for. |
