Backing material
 

Has anyone used suiting material for the backs of quilts? When I was working I had bought yards of it to make suits and dress pants, but never got to it. Did it work ?

is it washable? Bed/cuddle quilts are by their nature used and then washed again and again.
Would the suiting shrink or not shrink the same as what ever you use on the front?
My grandmother used to make service or handyman quilts out of wool suiting and skirts and pants.
And backed them with army blankets.

If the suiting is washable and the weight of the fabric is what you like, I say use it!!

I would cut a small piece (maybe 6" square), measure it, run it through the washer and dryer, and see how it comes out. If it shrinks a lot but still looks good, I would simply preshrink it before using it for batting. If it comes out all puckered or shrivelled, I wouldn't use it for a quilt backing. Asssuming it passes the wash/dry test, suiting material could be quite nice for a backing fabric as it would probably cling to the bed, not slip and slide around on you.

I had some pants material but I donated it to a charity I support because it would have been a bit too heavy for my taste.
