Love that!

I understand from seasoned quilters that using printed fabrics for backings will hide any minor mistakes you might make while quilting. Solid color, muslin, etc tends to show every stitch.
If you're short of fabric to complete the backing, many quilters work in extra fabric from the quilt top fabrics. You're the only one that knows this didn't start out as an artistic endeavor.
I currently have waaaaaaay to much calico print in my stash, so I'm currently doing a simple patchwork of these and using it as backing. When I get tired of that, I start using something else LOL
I guess the bottom line is whatever works for you "it's a good thing"

I love pieced funky backs.

I like my back to compilment the front as much as possible
this where you can find backsides if you like
backside fabric.com

I don't like to peice the back so I love it now that you can buy the extra wide fabric!

This is new to me, too. I've only seen it here, but I think it looks so cool I've started doing some of mine like that, too.

Oh, that's as cute as can be!

I love some of the leftover fabric incorporated onto the backing. Gives a plain back some character! I know some quilt judges have admired the creativity of backs and didn't give or take away points on thie judging the quilts.

mshawii 08-22-2011 02:11 PM

Usually it is because there isn't enough backing fabric for the width of the quilt. I personally look for a fabric with a pattern of some kind that I can use as a quilting design. If I don't know what to quilt, I can use the design of the fabric, and put the quilt on the machine upside down( backing on top). Works for me!

Nicely pieced! Looks like you intended it to be that way.

katcox 08-22-2011 03:04 PM

I some times just use up the the scraps left over from the front.

imadispatcher 08-22-2011 06:41 PM

I agree completely

marajan 08-22-2011 07:53 PM

I have made two quilts, that I hadto piece some of the main material to the back. they look very pretty; and would do it again. as I am guilty of piecing without any specific pattern.. sizes seem to differ maybe a leftover block with more of the same. one way to cover-uo mistakes.

I like this one very much

ljwinemiller 08-23-2011 02:09 AM

I am blessed to have so many expert quilters give me advice and I thank you very much. I have learned so much from this forum and I will take everyone's advice on backing, now I think I understand more why backings are important. I will try some of these on my next quilt!

carrieg 08-23-2011 02:42 AM

I've seen OBW quilts or stack'n'whack ones that include a piece of the fabric used because the end result is so different from the original fabric. Does that sentence make any sense at all? LOL

Olivia's Grammy 08-23-2011 01:45 PM

I think I've done all that has been mentioned in this thread. I really like to make two tops and use one as the back. Sometimes I like a plain muslin back. I've even used fleece for the backing, I don't use batting with fleece. I like flannel for baby quilts and sometimes for lap quilts. As several have said it is one's preference. Not right or wrong, just what you like.

quilt-fanatic 08-24-2011 02:02 AM

No to piecing the back. I did the front and that is enough. However, I ALWAYS look at the backing at shows and on mine, I want the back to be as pretty as the front!

romanojg 08-24-2011 06:25 AM

I try to use a design on mine for two reasons. First of all it's prettier but the main reason is that I can't afford to send it out to be quilted not that the quilters don't deserve what the charge; I just can't afford it. If it has a busy print like flowers then you can't see my mistakes as well. I've heard some use plain fabric for backs because it can be cheaper but for me it's just camoflauge.

pjnesler 08-25-2011 04:26 PM

I've had to add left over blocks of fabrics from the quilt to make enough backing when I've run short. I've also read that it is actually a good practice to do this just in case the front gets damaged. The backing can be used to help repair the quilt. Fact or not, it sounds reasonable.

abc123retired 08-25-2011 05:43 PM

I don't like scrappy backs or backs with blocks. After all the work on the front, I want the back to be pretty and have the quilt reversible if desired. Just MHO.
