I some times just use up the the scraps left over from the front.

I agree completely

I have made two quilts, that I hadto piece some of the main material to the back. they look very pretty; and would do it again. as I am guilty of piecing without any specific pattern.. sizes seem to differ maybe a leftover block with more of the same. one way to cover-uo mistakes.

I am blessed to have so many expert quilters give me advice and I thank you very much. I have learned so much from this forum and I will take everyone's advice on backing, now I think I understand more why backings are important. I will try some of these on my next quilt!

I've seen OBW quilts or stack'n'whack ones that include a piece of the fabric used because the end result is so different from the original fabric. Does that sentence make any sense at all? LOL

I think I've done all that has been mentioned in this thread. I really like to make two tops and use one as the back. Sometimes I like a plain muslin back. I've even used fleece for the backing, I don't use batting with fleece. I like flannel for baby quilts and sometimes for lap quilts. As several have said it is one's preference. Not right or wrong, just what you like.

No to piecing the back. I did the front and that is enough. However, I ALWAYS look at the backing at shows and on mine, I want the back to be as pretty as the front!

I try to use a design on mine for two reasons. First of all it's prettier but the main reason is that I can't afford to send it out to be quilted not that the quilters don't deserve what the charge; I just can't afford it. If it has a busy print like flowers then you can't see my mistakes as well. I've heard some use plain fabric for backs because it can be cheaper but for me it's just camoflauge.
