Backing Yardage question

Question, I'm doing my first full size quilt (84 x 89) and was looking to order some backing that comes in 110". How is this cut? Like, how many yards do I need to buy? 3? I suck at math and want to make sure I'll have enough. :)

since the backing will cover the widest measurement, you can divide the shorter measurement, 84, by 36. this gives you 2.3333 yds.... so you can buy 2.5 yds unless you are sending it to a LA. then i'd buy 3. to give the all around extra that requires

3 yds of 110" wide fabric will give you a piece that is 110" x 108" (36x3= 108) the width is salvage to salvage- the cut is how many yards you order. so- 2 1/2 yd= 90" (2 yds= 72" + 1/2 yd= 18" ...72+18= 90)...if you buy 3 yds you will have some extra to save for a future project

http://www.quiltsbymillie.com/How_to...te_Backing.php I figure selvage to selvage would be at least 40 inches. fabric seems to be getting skinnier. then how long your quilt is. then times that by two. if the fabric isn't wide enough, you may have to times it by three. or add blocks or other fabric to make the backing wider so it will fit. Good luck.

Thank you! I thought I was about right, but I suck at math and haven't done a full quilt before, just small baby crib quilts. :)
