Okay, I've seen several threads stating to check for thinness and color transfer when buying fabric. Are there any brands that are worse than others?

Thanks.

I will follow this thread, thanks for creating it!

"better" and "worse" are very much in the eye of the beholder.

Very subjective ..... everyone has their own specifications on what makes a good fabric

So true. Some may be fine for wall hangings and not so good for a quilt. It depends on what you are looking for.

Feel it, baby! Ewww, that sounds bad, but you know what I mean. Touch and you'll learn. And even a few of those with a nice "hand" might wash funny. Most will wash and wear beautifully.

If you're buying online, stick with brand names. Still, Wile e Coyote's Acme products (the lesser brands) will sew and wear quite fine. Perfect for stuff that won't be washed a lot or placed in a museum. Save your fabric dollars for heirloom quilts or those dang cute collections they keep releasing! ;) Somebody make them stop!

All I can say to help is to feel the fabric. If it feels stiff or papery its pretty cheap and has stablizer in it to keep it smooth and give it body. Good fabric feels silky and soft and even a bit glossy. Moda is one of my favorites. The fabric is beautiful but the price is high. Joann's has decent fabric if you are learning as long as you don't get the cheapest one. I have used it and never had much trouble, but notice the difference in quality.
