I feel silly asking this, but what is a 'featherweight'? I have deduced that it is a type of sewing machine, but please explain the value of it in quilting.

Things are going your way, Congrats!

And the best part is it's all DH's fault! Such a fault...

Vintage Singer lightweight machine called a Featherweight but it is technically a 221 model. Made of aluminum it weighs like 9 lbs (11lbs with the case). Has a fold up extension bed. Only sews a straight stitch but a beautiful, consistent one. All mechanical so most of us can service our own. Great portable for taking to class.
And cute, so cute. Just darling. Love mine. |

Janet, many of us here seem to collect featherweights (I have 3!) because they are the best little gals to work on. They are also known in sewing circles where I grew up in Brooklyn, NY as Eleven Pound Portables. Some quilters here have been lucky enough to stroll into a 2nd hand store and find one for as little as a $10 bill, while others have been waiting for that stroke of luck because too many Greedy Gus's out there have priced them into the several hundreds. Persistence and patience will pay off - stay alert and look for that little black box with the metal snaps on the front - Lady Luck might be waiting for you just around the next corner!
