I've got a good friend who has a home business making little round trivets. She's got the COOLEST fabric, and has tons of leftover scraps from cutting out circles (various sizes, but typically I'd say they're around 3-4" and smaller - think about the 'leftovers' after cutting out a circle). I'm wondering if there are any good ideas out there to use these up on projects. She said she hates to throw them out (and, of course, I told her not to!). I'd appeciate any ideas you could throw at me. Like I need even more projects to do!

Thanks, and hope you all had a great weekend!

Try a crumb quilt............Check out Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville...............Lots of good info there.

BellaBoo 02-20-2011 02:08 PM

Here is what I did with a bunch of small scraps. I layered them between two pieces of wash away stabalizer and sewed them all together. I washed away the stabalizer, trimmed and had a big piece of crazy fabric. It adds a lot of texture for tote/purse and other projects. The stabilizer was cheap on the bolt at Walmart. Probably at JoAnns too.

Definately.

The best tip ever for scraps is to go to Bonnie Hunter's site, what she does with scraps is amazing

This is the link to her site just in case you haven't got it bookmarked: http://quiltville.com/index.html

Thanks for the link. Figured I'd show you exactly what we're talkin' about here. Do you think I should sort everything by color?? Should I trim to a size or just leave them as they are?

erstan947 02-20-2011 02:49 PM

Beautiful colors. These are a must to use! I would find the project I want to use and then cut accordingly.

whinnytoo 02-20-2011 03:19 PM

you can always send them to me !! lol or make crazy patch blocks?
My favorite quilts are scrappy quilts...................

lilithcat 02-20-2011 03:25 PM

Crumb quilt!

I'd sort by size first. I don't usually use anything over a 5x5 in a crumb block.

raedar63 02-20-2011 04:56 PM

Oh my what a treasure!

OMGosh ... I would so use them for tightly braided rugs. JUST PERFECT and no extra work involved in trimming them. either that or scrappy rugs.. They look so cool with all the colors

kso 02-20-2011 05:18 PM

There are quilts in them thar bags!!LOL

deedum 02-20-2011 05:20 PM

I use the really small pieces for doggie beds for the shelter, anything else that is bigger I use for crumb quilts or scrappies quilts!

bamamama 02-20-2011 05:22 PM

I'm working on one of Bonnie Hunters scrap quilts now, Spider web. You could make 10 quits and never put a dent in that scrap pile.

I probably have 4 more bags just like it in the garage. With the rumors of the prices of cotton going up, maybe I'll end up making ALL scrappy quilts in the future.

Scrap Happy 02-20-2011 05:28 PM

What pretty scraps! :) You lucked out and could have lots of fun with these. I would make a crumb quilt with them. Let us know what you decide on.

pojo 02-20-2011 05:29 PM

I would take them too I need (2) 3 inch squares I'm working on a hand sewn hexagon quilt. I need alot of asorments of colors and designs.

hobo2000 02-20-2011 05:30 PM

Go to http://www.susancarlson.com/Welcome.html and look at her "collage quilts" They are to die for! Iys all done with little snippets of cloth.

Rhonda 02-20-2011 05:32 PM

Looks like you could trim some of them to strips and sew them together. Then use them to cut out borders or squares etc.

sueisallaboutquilts 02-20-2011 06:03 PM

Yippee for you!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D

grammysews4u 02-20-2011 06:06 PM

Izy 02-21-2011 03:01 AM

Lavada 02-21-2011 03:04 AM

try a postage stamp quilt a mini tumbler or send them to me

glowworm 02-21-2011 03:52 AM

I use small scraps for quilt as you go potholders. Use strips or crazy quilt. I sew fabric to batting - then sew fabric to insulbrite. Sandwich them and bind.

karenpatrick 02-21-2011 04:15 AM

I once saw an episode of Simply Quilts where the guest - don't remember who she was - made floral wall hangings by putting fusible web on the back and then "snipping" them into blossoms and then fusing them down and sort of stippling them on top and they were absolutely lovely. I'm not describing it very well. Maybe someone else who saw the episode could describe it better. But she saved every tiny piece of fabric and made these "paintings" with them.

quilt3311 02-21-2011 04:17 AM

Wow what a haul!!! I'd press them all flat and cut the largest squares possible out of each piece. Or if there are some plains or tone on tones save that for applique pieces.

I would really like to see a picture of your "new' fabric. Any way you could post a picture?

How about raw edged piecing ? Just sew the pieces to a base fabric block, I use old sheets for this. When it is washed and dried , it will be "fluffy". Kids would love it , pets too. It feels nice.

barney 02-21-2011 04:54 AM

I like to cut into strips, sew together, cut into 21\2 strips and use for quilt binding on appropriate quilts.

patriciaponder 02-21-2011 05:38 AM

would work great for paper piecing or for sewing on adding machine paper to make strips. wonderful colors

eiltcoq 02-21-2011 05:41 AM

Happy Threadler, a Lady on the QB has made some beautiful mini quilts, another lady has made mug mats, another lady has made postcards and others have made doll quilts and crazy quilts and appliqued quilts. All of them have uses for small pieces of fabric.
I don't throw out any material since the it can be used for many purposes. Eiltcoq.

Psychomomquilter 02-21-2011 05:43 AM

If big enough, pincushions, crazy quilts, doll quilts, pot holders, sew the scraps together if not big enough, case holders for glasses, phones, etc....

#1piecemaker 02-21-2011 05:53 AM

My DH cuts all he can into 2 1/2 inch blocks and then the smaller pieces into postage stamp blocks. the trimmings are great for bird nest. Just put them outside. They will find them.

brookemarie19 02-21-2011 05:57 AM

Wow! What beautiful fabric that you have been given. I hope you find something to make with it as you have been given a few good ideas to start with.... or you could just send it to me

debbieoh 02-21-2011 06:01 AM

I start sewing the scraps togther anyway possible. LOL!!! Than when I have a huge piece I either cut shapes and put togther scrap quilts. or if its going good and I'm on a roll I end up with one scraaappy piece quilt without cutting shapes.
I've used bright and pastels and made small quilts for the hospital.

Karen's Kreations 02-21-2011 06:05 AM

I have a friend who cuts everything in small 2-3 inch squares and uses them as leaders & enders. I think she got the info from Bonnie Hunters website.

Happy Treadler 02-21-2011 06:57 AM

Oooooh, now I'm getting excited!! Thank you all for such great advice. I'm really loving the look of the crumb quilts with the bright colors. Would be kinda cool to put thin black sashing between the brightly colored blocks. Maybe some small amish-style blocks on black? Minature quilts? Potholders? Geez, maybe I CAN get some fun color into this neutral home. ;)

jeanneb52 02-21-2011 07:19 AM

WOW! looks like fun ahead

quilter64779 02-21-2011 07:23 AM

You have a gold mine in them. They will make beautiful scrappie quilts. Saw some strips there that could be sewn together for strip piecing. Please show us the results when finished with one.
