Baltimore Album Quilt

My daughter is beginning a Baltimore Album Quilt(BAQ). Today we were looking at books and reading on line and I have a question I cannot find an answer for, please help me. What constitutes a BAQ block? Are there set blocks as in Dear Jane, is it any applique block, floral appliques- one source states it is floral appliques, but can also be eagles and historic landmarks. So, what are they? Are there specific patterns? Thank you.

Baltimore Album quilts are usually intricate floral appliqué blocks. They can also be florals with a mix of images that reflect the quilter's life or interests. Like with any antique quilt pattern, different regions developed their own twist or adaptations.

You might also check the Baltimore Applique Society and look at some of the quilts and stories on their site. http://www.baltimoreapplique.com/

I think these were initially just a way to showcase advanced techniques and masterful needlework. Some blocks are built more around things that were significant to the culture or the recipient.

I really want to do a BAQ someday. How exciting for your daughter!
