Baltimore style quilt advice

I am headed to the Baltimore Museum of Art today to get some inspiration from their fantastic quilt collection. I am a medium skill quilter (thanks to all the advice and encouragement from this group)/advanced sewer but fearing so much applique to make a Baltimore style quilt. Is their a way to maybe paper piece something similar? I have one of Mimi Dietrich's pattern books to start applique but curious if there are other options. If I go applique route I was given a Cricut for Xmas so was going to try to cut the freezer paper and maybe even the fabic on it. Any and all advice is welcome!!!

I would remember to take my camera if that is allowed. I have one of Mime Dietrich's book but never got that advanced into applique. I do prefer the freezer paper because I was never very good or accurate at needle turning.
