Bargello quilt

This is my first attempt at a bargello quilt. I'm unsure of the next step-- do I need to add a border or would it look good if I just do a binding? What color would you suggest for border and/or binding?

Great job and your color selection is beautiful.

.
I dont' think it needs a border unless you want to make it larger. As for binding you could pull out any of the colors or use black or white to frame it. Great job on it, I love the rainbow look!

I would use a medium grey to bind. I don't think it needs a border.

Your quilt is beautiful.

Very pretty bargello. It really doesn't seem to need a border unless you want to make it larger. Possibly a solid red would look nice for a binding.

Borders "contain" a design. While I am a huge fan of borders to frame most quilt designs, Bargellos are the exception.

To me, Bargello patterns inherently resist containment. They are a snapshot of a pattern that goes on forever.

If I were you, I'd add nothing more than a binding that doesn't call any attention to itself. FWIW, I've made ~10 Bargello quilts, and that's how I've finished them. No regrets!

Your quilt is beautiful. I would not add a border and I would experiment with colors to see which looks best.

I just flipped through 2 of Eileen Wright's bargello books to see what she used. Some had no borders but others had a narrow border of brown or green or picked up the color she wanted to highlight in the quilt--such as purple. In your case I'd preview a bit of that dark blue in the upper right corner or what about a deep brown-red that's in the center but even darker? Personally, I like a border on the quilts I make as it frames the work and gives the eye a place to stop.

It seems that no border is what everyone else thinks best-I think so also. I really like your quilt very much. I know it is more work, but I would consider a pieced binding using the major colors from the edges. That would allow the concept of infinity to continue.

If you want to increase the size, I would go with a border and binding in either black or charcoal grey.

I would use a red to bind...but that's just me.

I like borders on my quilts, just my preference. When I made my one and only bargello I added my border but I also added the focal fabric into the border on the sides as if they were just running right off the page. Also added it thru the binding too which was fun to get it to match up correctly but that's how I wanted to finish it off and I was pleased with my extra efforts.

This so pretty! I love the bright colors you used. If you decide to go with a border, black (or navy blue) would really make the colors pop.

Suz,
That is a great idea! Love the look, it was worth the extra effort!

If this will be a wall hanging, I wouldn't even do a binding. I would do a facing which will just be on the back--there are a bunch of youtube videos to show you how. Of course, if it's a bed quilt then you'll have to bind it. I love it just as it looks!

Marge611 02-01-2017 03:04 PM

Love the bargello!

I don't think it needs a border either. I would bind it with red but any of the colors in it would work nicely too.

Beautiful quilt! With the ones I've made I didn't border but I don't with a lot of my quilts. If you're wanting bigger perhaps darker of any of the colors in solids or a blender (I guess I'm thinking like a mat on a picture frame). Grey binding to be in the background of the beautiful fabrics you chose or again darker of any of the colors in the quilt to frame it. Look forward to seeing your finish so please post when you're done.

I love how snooze2978's bargello runs off too. Might have try that on my next one!

SuzzyQ 02-01-2017 04:36 PM

I'd go for a border

I would toss several prints alongside your top to see if there is one that "fits" then I would do a narrow border first pulling out a colour from the print and then a wider print border. This is what I mean... I made this while receiving radiation for breast cancer.

sewmuch 02-02-2017 11:52 AM

Beautiful, no border needed...:)

lblank42 02-02-2017 08:22 PM

Love your colorful Bargello! I too would go without borders. The reds in the center look like your focal fabric, and I would use those for the binding.

Fabric Galore 02-03-2017 01:58 PM

I normally make the binding from the same fabric I use for the backing. I love the gradation of the colors in your quilt. You definitely don't need a border.

lynnie 02-03-2017 02:19 PM

that came out beautifully, how about black, white or grey? your colors are fantastic
