Working at home and loving it

How about scheduling a short session 3 times weekly in which it is your JOB to sew. Then as you are accomplishing something, then increase time or numbers of sessions. That way you are seeing it as valuable use of time and not fun. After awhile the other items on your to-do list get done quickly so you can devote more time to the JOB!
Works for me. The time on the Board daily is my reward for getting many tasks completed around the house. Let us know how you do

Oh my gosh, I am laughing at you. It's like looking into a mirror as I read. I also have your OCD. Yep, that's what it sounds like to me. I drive myself crazy til I just hit the mach. & go at it. My sense of order drives me crazy.

I AM retired yet I assign myself tasks around the house that must be done before I can "play" with my sewing. It's rough being your own boss. Then my sewing rm. needs to be in order before I start. My prob. is that I usually have to tidy up at the end of the day so I don't face it in the morn.
Just relax & give yourself a break. Do what you feel like sometimes.

You sound exactly like me.....I've been told I'm a perfectionist at heart....and wanting to do my very best is what's actually slowing me down (or keeping me from starting). I don't have any answers, but it's gd to know I'm not alone with this!!

yes, I agree you have set yourself up for failure by doing all this reading, practicing of FM, etc. You need to see yourself as an intern.....start with something small, simple and tell yourself it is just a test run.............but do not do the quilting of it.....just the piecing.....maybe you might want to sandwich it and do/learn handquilting......a good way to sit and RELAX. Then, if you are still interested do something a bit larger....heavens, don't jump into something too complex...like GFG or DWR, keep it squares, HST and strips....the jelly roll patterns are great beginner pieces, altho if the fact that they are really scrappy may upset your idea of perfection.........so make your own jelly roll with colors you like......anyway you start, START, but take one baby step at a time, not leaps and bounds......and you will find that little quilt bug will have bitten!!!!!

Some really great ideas here - good luck!!!

Honey, whenever I sit on the computer and look at ideas I get paralyzed for some reason too. When I get into a frozen place myself I start listening to the messages that are running in my head, IF I can hear them, they are usually negative and fearful, I had a mean overbearing Mother who put those messages in my head, now I am spending a lifetime trying to retrieve those nasty messages out of my head and dispose of them. It takes a lot of work but it is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I don't know if this applies to you, if not, maybe someone else who needs this advice will read this and it will change their lives. I hope it helps someone!! (I guess those little negative/scary thoughts that may have come from 2 devastating tragedies so close together could do it too) God Bless, I hope and pray you can overcome this and feel happy doing whatever brings you joy!

Very interesting thread which sounds a lot like myself too. I love to piece but lately I have issues starting projects. I'm going to keep looking at this and reading the responses looking for an answer to my issues.

Maybe shopping for, prepping, organizing is your thing? But actually sitting down and going through the whole process is not as exciting?

I'd suggest the old Nike commercial, "Just do it!" Pick one of the projects you bought and just do it. If it's a small one you'll get the thrill of a completed and wonderful accomplishment fast! That might inspire you to do some of the others. If you can't decide which to start with you might consider letting your hubby pick one out for you to make.

When I get like that I go to the LQS and just browse. There are so many pretty fabrics, and books and magazines that it makes it worth it to pump up my inspiration and get the juices going. Then its back to the machine in a better frame of mind

I've royally screwed up a quilt I worked on for three years for my husband ... but he doesn't really care, and no one else can see the mistakes when they look at it - not even my mother, who has sewn for 40+ years. There's not a person on this board who doesn't have an "ugly quilt" laying around somewhere that they'd rather no one see, but they learned a lot from making it, you can bet.

You know, one of my biggest challenges to overcome as I have grown older is the fear of failure. If I didnt think I would be good at something, I would just skip it. Then I turned 40 and realized I had passed up tons of things in my life that I should have given a chance. Now, I dont let anything stop me. I go for it. It is hard overcoming that fear though. And there are times I stall and have to push myself through it. In the end, the best advice I can give is: Get yourself a nice cuppa of tea, settle down in a sunny window with a little notebook and pen. And just sit and think of things you want to do, would like to try, want to master..etc. Jot down what you think you need to keep track of. Just take 10 for yourself. Not doing anything, just getting to know YOU! that has been such an important thing for me. And it helps me get past the fear.

And speaking of ugly quilts. ... The first 2 quilts I made definitely qualify. I named them Rainbow Vomit. Because they look literally like a rainbow threw up. Now, both quilts hang proudly on the chairs in my living room. They look great there....and are very humbling.

Can you believe that is a rail fence pattern? :D

Just give yourself permission to enjoy all the processes. And let the rest go....Life is too short! HUGS
