base fabric for a stained glass appliqué wall hanging

I am going to make a wall hanging of a cross with rays of different color batiks coming from the cross.
I have several questions.
What kind of fabric should I use to put the appliqué pieces on? I am going to use the stained glass effect, so I don't have to worry about the edges of the appliqué as they will be covered by the "stained glass".
I am thinking of fusing all the pieces to the background.
Also, what kind of batting should I use?
I am sort of new to this technique, so any and all suggestions are most welcome.

I would use a light muslin if you intend to do it with a foundation. If you use a fusible, make sure it is for sewing through. Heat and bond LITE, Wonder Under, Misty Fuse etc. can all be sewn through. I would use a batt like Hobbs 80/20 cotton/poly.

Thanks for your quick answer Tartan.

I used an old white sheet and Wonder Under. Be sure to overlap your edges a little so they will not come apart when you sew the leading on. Warm and White is my go to, but the Hobbs is good too.

JudyMN, Thanks for your advise. It sounds like you have made stained glass quilts, if so, what did you use for the lead?

Those bias tape makers are really nice and bend around shapes very easily. But, I think I saw some people use black yarn. I thought that was very smart.

I also read that you can also use suede.
