basting with glue question
 

I know there are tons of posts on glue basting and I am trying this (again)

My question is... how much time do you wait for drying?

I have one layer of fabric and batting "glued". I ironed this to help dry.... but how long should I wait before I flip over to do the other side?

I checked and this is not completely dry - even after ironing. Should I iron more? should I wait another hour? or should I just flip and do the other side now?

I used glue full strength in a large cross hatch pattern.

Am I worrying too much about it??

i don't use glue. tried it once on binding. ironed and the tiny bits of glue came through the fabric. i wasn't pleased.

I glue baste with full-strength Elmer's School Glue all the time. I usually just let the quilt dry overnight. But I glue it all at once. Tape the backing right side down to the floor. Lay the batting out and smooth it. Fold back half at a time and glue it down. Then spread the top out on the backing, smooth it out, fold it back and glue it down. I drizzle the glue right from the bottle in a back and forth motion. Don't worry if the glue comes through the fabric. It washes right out.

I would guess you'd need at least 8 hours for it to dry completely. Maybe I'm way off, but overnight works every time. I've never had a problem with the glue gumming up my machine, and I never get a wrinkle in my quilt. I think it's the only way to go. If I had to pin, I'd never quilt a thing.

thank you for your reply...that gives me some idea. I have all 3 layers "glued" together now. I will quilt tomorrow :)

I dilute Elmer's school glue half and half with water. I found I don't need to use it full strength. I usually press the sandwich when I'm done and am able to quilt right away.

I dont wait for mine to dry. I iron it right away which sets the glue and I can get to the quilting faster.

thank you all for your thoughts... not just on this post but over and over again on the other posts as well. I quilted my elmers glue basted quilt this afternoon. It went well! I will be doing this again. This first quilt I had fleece backing and I am curious to see how I will manage with cotton or flannel back and the glue basting
