Used a basting gun----instead of pins or tacking with thread??

CoriAmD 10-28-2010 07:33 AM

I used to use a basting gun - thought it would be so much easier. First one broke after a few uses, bought another one... soon it broke too. I finally bought some special basting pins and now only use that. Too much hassle trying to get the gun to work.

Spray adhesive here. I had one but found myself running over them with my machine when I machine quilted them.

I used to use one. If you get one, be sure to get the one with the finer needle and smaller tacks (Dennison is a good brand). Once I tried spray basting, I never went back to the tack gun; however, I prefered the tack gun to pinning and thread basting.

The biggest problem I had using the tacks was if I laid the quilt sandwich out on a table; in this case, you need a way to lift the quilt up a section at a time so the tack doesn't hit the table. Solved that problem by using an old-fashioned 2x4 frame with clamps.

Had to remove the tacks in small sections at a time while machine quilting or hand quilting.

Spray basting is so much easier.

I've used a basting gun and it's OK. I like pins better. I really want to try spray adhesive. I've heard good things about it.

Never used a basting gun. I like the spray basting.

I had a basting gun but it didn't last long. It was also awkward for me to use. I do either pin basting or spray basting now.

I tried to gun once, and it worked ok. I am hoping to use the basting spray next time to see what I like the best.

i tried it - didn't like it - spray basting much easier!!

I also have a basting gun. It worked for a quilt or two, fixed it, got busy with another quilt - but then it broke - this time for good. Too bad, as I had purchased lots of the little tacks.

But I discovered spray and now I use spray exclusively. Much easier, faster, and gives a very much better sandwich.

Trying to locate all those little plastic tacks on the quilt sandwich after I quilted it was a bummer. Pins - not so good.

I use the basting gun and like it. Great for wall hangings and small quilts. If you hold the gun at an angle it works well. There is a tool like a stitch ripper for removing the tacks.

I have never spray basted I must try it but on a smaller quilt.

I spray baste only. I will use safety pins around the edges if the quilt is large, just to be sure the edges don't separate or move around.

I have two, one won't work and half the time the other one jams. Now I use spray baste or safety pins. Sorry

campion 10-28-2010 01:29 PM

Aw well I have pinned it from the center outover then ran out of pins so used the gun for the rest so I hope that works ok

No tacking gun for me, just adhesive spray or thread basting.

donnalynett 10-29-2010 07:58 PM

Eeeeks! I was thinking about purchasing the gun but now I won't. I have COPD, asthma and emphsema so I don't use the spray. I use the pins and then just have to be careful when I quilt.

jitkaau 10-29-2010 08:00 PM

Spray adhesive suits me best.
