I used basting spray to baste my next quilt for quilting. I will never do it again, my carpet it sticky and I'm sticky and I hope it doesn't stain too bad :( But do I need to use pins still or should I just let it sit and dry overnight before I quilt it?

Try the overnight trick - maybe you used too much spray? Good luck. |
don't ever use basting spray on your carpet, use it on a table, you can get the stickiness off with just warm water and dishsoap.
|
uh oh... now what do I do to clean the carpet? I rent so I will get charged if it's horrible... I feel so stupid...
so should I use pins or are they not needed? |
Glad for these tips b/f I try it!

I let the quilt sit overnight to dry before I begin the quilting. Depending on the size of the item and how much spray I have used I may or may not pin the edges. Usually, once I have done my stabilization stitching I then remove the pins and I have enough hold.
As for the cleaning of the carpet, maybe try a small spot with a little water and dish soap. If that works ok then proceed? I guess it depends on how big the area is that needs to be cleaned. |
I used the basting spray for my second quilt and all it did was make everything sticky. Did not stick at all. I still had to pin mine. But then again I didn't let it dry overnight and the top was denim so it was heavier.
As far as getting it out of your carpet, if regular soap will get it off a hard surface then maybe a good scrub with some carpet cleaner might do the trick? |
Just shampoo the carpet, it will come out. Do not feel stupid, we all make these mistakes. Basting spray has worked for me, just try it next time on a table.

Don't panic. It will come out of your carpet. Look at it as an opportunity to clean the carpet. Everyone knows carpet always needs cleaned anyway. :)
I alway end up pinning around the edges when I spray baste. I never seem to spray the edges of a big quilt as well as I should. Just a few pins around the border is all I need. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with spray basting. I like it so much better than pinning. It's all I do. |
Yes the overspray can be a messs! Looks like you got a lot of tips.
|
I have learned you do not need as much spray as I originally thought. I have never pinned although I am a new quilter. My Mom always pinned and I wanted an easier way. I learned to use the spray in a class @ my LQS. I have done it in my living room but like the hints by others of doing it outside and possibly pinning on the edge if needed. (I wouldn't have to worry about getting so close to the edge then)
|
you shouldn't need to pin. You do have to be careful how much spray you use, it only takes a light coating to work. I love the basting sprays.
|
I've taken old sheets and layed them on the carpet before spraying. Up here in the winter I can't take outside to spray. :-D Then I just throw in washing machine! When I spray baste, I usually just pin the edges on the borders unless its a very large quilt then I'll still hand baste just to make sure its secure.

I put down an old sheet, lk,e sew crafty mentioned. Worked like a charm. I've only done lap size quilts so far with the baste, but it worked great. Don't give up! Just Add a sheet to the floor or newspaper.
|
Thanks for all the tips everyone! Now I don't feel so dumb and ill do it better nexttime :)
|
I love spray basting, all that I do. May depend on the brand of spray you use. I started with the Dritz (worked at Joann) have used June Taylor, 505..etc and always go back to the Dritz. Does not require alot of spray, always repositioning...and does not gum up your needle.....Do have a can of Elmers I am going to test out, bought at Walmart half the price of Dritz....
|
I spray small projects on the vinyl kitchen floor - wipes up with a damp rag!
|
Wow, great idea about putting down the sheet! I have to spray mine in the basement, and I usually just put newspapers down to protect the industrial carpet that's down there. I like the washable sheet idea much better!
