Basting spray
 

A friend of mine is in need of help. She used basting spray to adhere an appliqué piece and unfortunately over sprayed onto the background fabric. She is now faced with removing the overspray. Has anyone ever had this problem? (I usually use a different method, so don't have any experience with the spray).

I also do a different method, but isn't the spray baste supposed to wash out? I used to use it to baste my quilts, but now use the school glue method.

I have never heard of anybody using basting spray for applique. So many safer items to choose from. Are there any washing instructions on the label???

I would apply tissue paper over the background area containing the unwanted overspray, then sew and quilt as usual. Remove most of the tissue before washing. Remaining tissue paper and all basting spray will come out in the wash. At worst might need to tweeze a few paper fragments from stitching lines after washing. Or, more expensive, use a wash away stabilizer instead of tissue paper. All that is needed is to cover up the stickiness of the spray until the quilt is washed.

I use 505 spray on all my quilts and find it washes right out of quilting cottons. If the background is washable, can she simply complete the project and launder?

What brand of basting spray did she use? She needs to read the directions on label. I just happen to have Sulky in front of me. According to the label, it does not wash out, but disappears in 2-5 days, you can iron it out immediately, or remove with alcohol. Hopefully she used temporary spray!

That's good to know about Sulky . . .i usually baste my quilts, then press the backside to ensure there's no shifting, then think about it a couple of days before starting the quilting. And wow, I'm slllooowwww, LOL

I was assuming 505 or similar quilter's basting spray. But if it was the Sulky, maybe she's home free with ironing! Maybe Sulky has different basting sprays for different purposes?
