batik can you mix with normal quilting fabric?
Hi I was at a quilt show today and for the first time I bought some batik. Whilst I was waiting to pay one of the stall owners was serving another lady and I heard him say... " u know u can't mix batik with other fabric you have to use all batik ! " well that shocked me cos I was intending to use normal quilting cotton fabric with the batik !! What do u think? Will the sky fall in and I get hauled off by the quilting police or is there a good real reason u can't mix them! ! Lol

I have mixed batiks with cotton fabrics all the time and it doesn't really matter. I usually stay away from it for backings because it is a denser fabric. Don't know why anyone would say something as silly like that! I mixed batiks in with my cottons on this quilt.

http://www.laundrybasketquilts.com/tablet/index.html Edyta Sitar has built her quilt business on mixing batiks and standard quilting cottons. Very successfully...

That is So Not True!!!
Many of us use batiks with lots of other fabrics every day! Browse the pictures category. You will see hundreds ( thousands) of beautiful quilts with batiks, regular cottons, reproduction prints, flannels... All kinds of fabrics. It sounds as if he was trying to force someone to buy more of his batiks. I hate it when someone tries to force their ( bad, uninformed rules) on others! |
Perfectly fine to mix. Batiks might bleed more or shrink differently than something else, but I haven't had problems.
|
It might be that they only sold batik, thinking about it I didn't see any other fabric on their stand. So they obviously are bias lol

Your quilt, your choice. :)
|
I prefer not to mix them - but there is no rule saying " don't"
|
I mix them all the time with great results.
|
I mix them all the time too!
|
While i don't always wash my fabrics before i do a project - i ALWAYS wash any cottons and batiks before combining them (washed separately of course). I've never had a bit of trouble combining the 2.

I say that guys was just trying to get more sales. I use both types of cottons all the time. never had a problem. I just try to make sure the they feel similar. just for quilt integrity. dont want one fabric to rip or what not while the others are just fine. have had that happen on one quilt i made and it was only one of the 4 batiks I used with two different regular quilting fabric.

I do it all the time (as you can see on my avatar).

|
