I am finally going to try and make something with batik. I started sewing a block and it seemed the needle sounded funny going thru the fabric. Are you supposed to use a smaller/skinner needle or is just a reg "quilting" needle OK to use? I was making such a "punching" sound I was not sure and didn't want to ruin fabric.

Did you start with a new needle? I usually do with a new project.

Batiks are more closely woven than regular quilting fabric, so that is why you get that sound. The needle is supposed to match the thread, rather than the fabric. So use a size that allows your thread to flow smoothly or you will end up breaking your thread a lot. If you do get thread breakage, then first change the needle to the same size. You may have gotten one with a burr in the eye, or it is old and worn. If you still get thread breakage, then you need a larger needle.

Usually, when you hear a popping sound as the needle is going through the fabric, it means that your needle is blunt and you need to change it or sharpen it. Of course, it will do this if you are using polyester thread on cotton fabric as well. It is best to use cotton, as the polyester will eventually cut the cotton with wear and tear.

Yes, use a microtex (sharps) needle for batiks, not a quilting or universal needle. It has a sharper point and a thinner shaft and will go between the threads of the denser weave of batiks. Needles have to go with the fabric as well as with the thread. It is the SIZE that goes with the thread and the TYPE that goes with the fabric.

yes a sharper needle is needed... just watch and make sure you don't get needle cuts.
